849153 2010-01-16 01:39:00 I have a video tape recording of my daughter's high school musical production of about 24 years ago. I am intending to transfer it to DVD, but there is an annoying hum on the tape, that I would like to have removed. I suspect that it is a noisy flourescent fitting close to the camera. Is there any way that I can remove the noise, or get it removed? Brucem (8688)
849154 2010-01-16 01:46:00 Once you transfer it you can split the audio out in a video editor.
then use something like Audacity to remove
the hum.
wiki.audacityteam.org
then replace the audio.

849155 2010-01-16 03:04:00 I've wasted quite a bit of time with audio filters in the past when I converted my LPs to MP3.

The reality for me was that whatever filter I used, it left the rest of the audio kinda flat and lifeless, and was best left with the original hiss.

I'd forgotten Audacity did that Dave -thanks for the reminder. I haven't got the problem at the moment but is there a (free) video editor that you'd recomend?

Thanks

Its quite likely that the noise has a broad spectrum of harmonics

This means that simply putting an EQ at 50hz - 80db will only remove one of the many
components of the noise.

Some audio editors have a mains hum filter inbuilt-adobe audition does from memory. It will probably reduce the sound quality, but this depends entirely on the recording and how sharp/accurate the filters are. You can also select the noise, sample it,and audition can remove this noise.

849158 2010-01-17 02:21:00 Thanks guys, I have loaded it to DVD, and onto the computer, and downloaded Audacity. Now I need a video editor to split audio out. Has anyone any recomendations for something that works and is cheap (preferably free)? Brucem (8688)
849159 2010-01-17 10:06:00 Hi BruceM

For want of a better suggestion, FORMAT FACTORY (http://www.formatoz.com/) will split out the audio from the video. It's free. However, as we found out recently it also installs a Trogan along with the program. This trogan is easy to get rid of and removal does not stop Format Factory working.

Please read this post (pressf1.co.nz)before downloading for instructions on how to make the program safe.

If you have Nero installed, you might be able to access Wave Edit. This an excellent sound editor and has a built in Hum Filter

Hope this helps

849160 2010-01-17 10:23:00 You could use the free trial of Adobe Premiere Pro.

Super looks as though it might do it too.

849161 2010-01-20 04:22:00 Thanks Dave, I have downloaded Adobe Premier Pro, at my broadband speed the total download 1.2Gb took about 9 hours. I haven't tried it yet, will post the results. Brucem (8688)
