747384 2009-02-14 04:15:00 More like a fully paid up member of the liberal white middle class. The white middle class cant all be lumped together when it comes to crime and punishment prefect (6291)
747385 2009-02-14 04:37:00 What a depressing thread this has been. As a fully paid up member of the white middle class I can hardly believe the hypocrisy that has been displayed over this matter.

The death of a (Polynesian) teenager who sprayed paint on a wall is seen of little consequence compared to the righteous wrath of the owner of the wall. It was the boy's own fault that he died. Oh, and it was his family's fault as well. What an injustice that the perpetrator received a 4 year sentence, but at least if he continues to behave himself he might be out in a few months.
I fear there should be no redemption for the underclass.

Garth McVicar thinks that Emery should have received home detention. One positive outcome of this miserable affair is that it has flushed out the real values and attitudes of the Sensible Sentencing people, and they have certainly blown all their credibility in my eyes.

At the end of it all, a boy is dead, his family has been subjected to public vilification from people who do not know them and should know better, and poor old Emery will have to paint his wall when he gets home.

Very sad. There should be no redemption for the underclass.
Those at the coal face, such as McVicar know this and respond accordingly.

747386 2009-02-14 04:43:00 Well for what it’s worth I think Emery should have received a Queens’s medal for services beyond the call of duty, not a jail sentence!

He’s done us all a huge service and I shall probably join him if I catch any of the sods tagging my wall. ;)

Be careful BM. :)

You might find yourself being called a "twat" for expressing thoughts like that, or even get intimidated and threatened by the resident loud mouthed biker :)

Oh, I agree with you 100%

I haven't the slightest idea what you are on about.

You included the quote: "I fear there should be no redemption for the underclass." within your quote of Jayess64

I would guess that it was a simple editing mistake on your part :(

He's not just 'a boy'.

He's a criminal.

747393 2009-02-14 09:31:00 I agree with Jayess64, the Sensible Sentencing Trust have shown their true values this time.

Here is their "Mission Statement" (bold text mine)

"To obtain a large base of community support, and ensure safety for all New Zealanders from violent and criminal offending, through education, development of effective penal policies, and the promotion of responsible behaviour, accountable parenting, and respect for each other at all levels of society."

So home detention for Emery would ensure safety for all New Zealanders from violent and criminal offending???
