747843 2009-02-19 21:51:00 Very well - so now advance an argument in support of your proposition.

New Zealand already has a precedent for databases of various types to be established. A National DNA database could be useful in several ways to both the State and the People.

I do realise that there almost certainly will be people whom will use any database for their own reasons which may or may not be lawful.

I take the attitude that people should give a sample because if they have done nothing wrong then they should have nothing to fear. Much like fingerprint evidence, a DNA match says nothing about date or time.

747844 2009-02-19 21:52:00 Sorry Deano,I shouldn't have made you face the truth, getta grip lad and find yoyrself a nice commo forum. Cicero (40)
747845 2009-02-19 22:07:00 Next person who makes a personal comment gets a week, Im specifically looking at both Cicero AND Deane F here.

Cicero, mate its really not called for, you dont have to hurl abuse in that direction. Whilst you may not agree with all of Deane F's posts, he / she (Gender-neutral here, like the rest of the internet) is still a valid contributing member. If you really have a problem, PM each other and sort it out, or go meet up with one another near the Avon River and duke it out to the death - its nearby you both.

Deane F, its not nice being called names, however you definitely have a tendency to come of as snide and cocky in some of your posts (Then again so does Cicero come to think of it). Im not saying that you are, but please be careful of how you respond, especially the last few posts, no need to get so worked up. I know its *just a forum* but real people have real feelings.

To be honest, you both should really be getting 24-hours in the sin-bin. However, Im in a good mood today (regardless of the weather), so please play nicely. You both need to take a breather before posting, please.

Now, this thread could turn out really quite interesting, given my way I'd create a new forum that only two people had the chance to post in to debate whatever issue (DNA sampling it appears). There's no need for others to spoil it.

If you dont like where this thread is going, simply dont click the link to open it, duh!

So, we have a topic set then? :D

747846 2009-02-19 23:22:00 To Chilling Silence:-
I think we have it set but time will tell.

It is just a debate. Personal attacks can and do happen. There is no need to shoot the message bringer in my opinion.

Perhaps we could lock this thread at this time and I start a new one?

747847 2009-02-20 00:06:00 Whilst I can see the merits of having a national database of DNA, the risks associated with it are too great. As a society, we are currently making huge technological and scientific advances. While this allows us to achieve things we couldn't previously achieve, such as DNA testing, it also means people who don't necessarily have the best intentions also have access to this technology.

One of the difficulties of storing biometric data such as DNA is that it can't easily be encrypted. Due to the nature of DNA, you never have an exact sequence, there are always slight discrepancies. This means that storage of these data must be incredibly well secured and only accessible to very few people, which unfortunately isn't very easy to do.

We don't know what technologies the future may hold, and a DNA database could in the near future become a very dangerous thing. Targeted biological attacks, or similar threats could become viable, whereby the knowledge of a person's DNA could potentially pose a threat to that person.

In closing, DNA databasing could indeed assist in helping solve criminal cases and have other useful applications, but the dangers of having such a database outweigh the potential benefit.

Edit: Woops, thought I was logged in under my Deane F account.

747848 2009-02-20 00:29:00 That is unusual Roddy Boy.

A post longer than your signature.

Since you closed I hope that is the end of your opinion on this matter.

747850 2009-02-20 00:38:00 I made an opening statement, presented some points, then made a closing statement.

The ball is now in your court, Sweep, to present a rebuttal.

Or are your debating skills not up to scratch?
roddy_boy (4115)
747851 2009-02-20 00:40:00 Yes roddy there are risks in a national data base of dna but if it helps to catch criminals such as the scum who attacked the 85 year old while trying to steal his car then I think the risks are worth taking Dally (6292)
747852 2009-02-20 00:43:00 Thank you, Dally, for that absolutely fantastic rebuttal. How can I argue with such brilliant points? roddy_boy (4115)
