The amount of money companies, city councils, and government departments pay for "iwi consultation" for any sort of substantial sized project or development is phenomenal. Of course, since this is "cultural", the media are scared of kicking up a fuss about it.

As John H said, this case is special because of the way it (appears) to have been done. Memphis, the money was paid by Meridian specifically to build accessways to conservation areas near the windfarm, and to fund a monitoring programme for the endangered bird species. It's not a matter of throwing $175000 at Doc staff and telling them to go and spend it how they like.

"Mr Benson-Pope said there was nothing unusual about deals being made under the Resource Management Act but he was surprised to hear the deal was made in secret."

This just means that the larger and more powerful lobby groups get the deals.

748383 2009-02-16 20:47:00 How the devil do you bribe a Government Department?

You may be able to bribe an individual, or individuals with influence, but how can you bribe a department?

I mean in this case the $170,000 has to be deposited somewhere and I’d imagine that somewhere would be subject to audit.

Got me, but it needs explanation.

What am I missing here?

It's the non-story of the year, and the year isn't even this one.

Possibly some money could be given to the
http://www.forestandbird.org.nz/ as they help all species and say they monitor things.

Let us keep all of New Zealand for the wild life and us people just leave to let the wild life get on with coping with predators.

The RMA needs an axe. It is legislation made in a hurry without thought for the consequences.
