748629 2009-02-17 09:11:00 Just out of interest, anyone now use HDMI?

Are there video cards with HDMI without going via a dongle?

I assume a dongle would degrade?

Cheers :D

748630 2009-02-17 09:16:00 You can get mobos with HDMI onboard. I'm using HDMI at the mo.

With an ATI HD3400 or something PCI-E card, which has VGA and DVI on it as well

You can get PCI-E cards with HDMI that support 5:1.

And there are cards that support sound / 5:1, but the mobo needs to have a SPDIF header on it (so you can plug the cable in) to get 5:1 sound

A dongle is what exactly?

748631 2009-02-17 09:27:00 I think he means an adapter.

Nomad-Most PCI-E cards come DVI and a DVI to HDMI adapter.
Some come with HDMI.

DVI is same quality as HDMI, so unless you really need to carry both audio and video over one cable, its not needed really.

I'm not sure if a DVI to HDMI adapter still carries across audio signals....as DVI doesn't carry audio? After researching I'm still unsure:p

Only HDMI carries audio, so you must have RCA cable as well when using DVI -HDMI .

My lappy has HDMI output and is the easiest thing in the world to hook up to the TV . Using Vista it is just plug and play, no shagging round with monitor selections and resolutions . The only thing it asks is whether you want the display on both monitors .

748633 2009-02-20 08:28:00 Before I had a ASUS 9600GT and it had a audio cable, from SPDIF off the motherbaord to the input of the video card. The video card only had DVI, it was provided with a DVI/HDMI converter. So .... does this allow HDMI via the DVI port of the card to carry audio? Nomad (952)
748634 2009-02-20 08:32:00 If the card doesnt have SPDIF on it (and it doesnt have sound on it), you wont get sound

And no I think you need an HDMI cable (thats if the card has a HDMI connection on it)

No, I dont think DVI carries sound

748635 2009-02-20 09:18:00 The current card had no audio cable . The previous card did . It was a bit like the audio cable that you go from the soundcard to the CD player .

I mean it had two pins on the card and the instructions were SPDIF 3/4 pins on the motherboard onto the 2 pin connector on the PCIe card .

The card only had DVI ports at the back, with a HDMI converter thing, what was the point of being provided with such a cable (between the motherboard and video card) if it wasn't gonna carry audio .

748636 2009-02-20 09:58:00 Only way to find if it works is to connect that cable, connect the HDMI adapter. And see if it works Speedy Gonzales (78)
