849755 2010-01-18 20:12:00 Hi,

I was just wondering . I have not seen slimline DIY PCs - cases and motherboards - are these obtainable? I have seen plenty of supermarket PCs in this regard thou . Do you use slimline motherboards or do you just use a std one and use a special card adaptor to place the cards side ways?

What is the general requirements to run a HD TV Tuner card?
Builtin or entry graphics ok?

Just need a DVI / HDMI .
Not playing games .

Cheers .

849756 2010-01-18 20:18:00 A dual core 2.0 CPU+ would also help. Or quad core. The higher the better

I'm using a 2.8 CPU with just a ATI HD 4550 card. Its good enough. I dont play games on this. And a lot of hdd space. Since if you record a program thats in HD, an hr or 2, will use up to 6-12 GB. I suppose a monitor that supports it will help. I think you can only put so much in one of those slimline cases. Depends what you mean by slimline mobos. You can only buy ATX or MATX (this depends on WHAT the shop sells)

849757 2010-01-18 20:20:00 I'd just go with a high-speed CPU, use any sort of GPU that fits in the case. Onboard may work just fine if your CPU is good enough (I'd err on the side of caution and go slightly faster, such as a 2.4Ghz dual-core or better, as my 2Ghz Dual-core Pentium D doesn't quite handle 1080p). 849758 2010-01-18 20:22:00 Yeah pretty much a media PC, that I am thinking up with - should I have my own place and should I renovate since we are at the mo doing the kitchen.

Ie., a PC in the lounge only, paired to the LCD, no games, no real work other than email and the internet.
Thought it is cheaper and more configurative than a freeview deck, dvd/blue ray deck and not to mention a expensive hd recording deck.

How about slimline motherboards? Available?
Nomad (952)
849759 2010-01-18 20:27:00 Motherboards are motherboards, just different spec's and sizes, length x width.

You can get slimline cases - no problems - just depends on what you want and how much you want to pay.Something like This Aywun MW-100 (www.imagef1.net.nz) - any good computer shop can get cases to suit. Their site (www.aywun.com/) - products ITX.

The problem is getting low profile cards, and with the smalelr / tighter cases you have to be careful about air flow. Ususally the slim line cases also have smaller cooling fans so can be a bit more noisy than a larger case.

Edited: my own media center has a ThermalTake Tenor (www.modders-inc.com) - the black one, slightly larger than a slimline to allow full size cards, it has 60mm front fans. Which on hot days can be a little noisy.

849760 2010-01-18 20:36:00 how about this one?
www.intel.com
it has built in HDMI and hardware acceleration according to the blurb.
available on trademe so probably from others as well.

note: doesn't seem to have a PCI-E 16x slot!

849761 2010-01-18 20:57:00 Cool - are the cards vertical low profile or can you get riser card adaptors  to put them side ways? Nomad (952)
849762 2010-01-18 21:47:00 Hm I didn't go too large on CPU large cpu = large cooling = fans etc. A dual core is useful as it means the machine can do something in the background without affecting the viewing.

Personally I find the Nvidia graphics cards better they had a lot less issues that the ATI range in regards to Freeview|HD decoding. The point is your graphics card should be doing all the viewing decoding work, not your CPU.

Also, don't listen to the marketing - there is no such thing as an HD TV tuner card. DVB-S and DVB-T (what is used for freeview|HD) just record the stream being transmitted, they don't care what it is...it's up to the pc to figure it out on watching.

Built in graphics are starting to work, the 780G and 785G motherboards, but I haven't had personal experience with those.

Finally watch the slimline cases, some don't take full atx motherboards, or normal power supplies, and cooling and expansion cards can be issues.

Personally I have a standard midi case (about $80) and standard ATX motherboard...but I was after 4 PCI slots and run 5 tuners (Dual analogue, Dual DVB-T, DVB-S)

849763 2010-01-18 22:44:00 Umm no, I just changed the CPU in this, and its just using the fan it came with.

And there's only 2 fans in the case (they were in the case, before I changed the CPU)
