| 750128 | 2009-02-22 00:38:00 | There's probably not much in the way of hardware/networking knowledge that would be of use to an accountant, but I'd very much recommend you learn some good database fundamentals, such as ETL processes, table schema, and a solid grasp of SQL. A large part of accounting, from an IT point-of-view involves taking data from an accounting package, and manipulating it so you can analyze it in any way you like. I'd also recommend that you learn everything you can about Excel - it's not perfect, but it's a very handy (and ubiquitous) tool for accounting. Specifically, I'd learn about pivot tables, advanced formulae (nested IF statements etc), and visual basic/macro's, which will really help you unlock Excel. HTH! :thumbs: |

| 750129 | 2009-02-23 02:09:00 | I agree with nofam... the key to good accounts analysis is being able to use Excel well ( I have developed a comprehensive sheet that auto creates an entirely new set of accounts using a trial balance) and it has proven extremely valuable (I have my own business and wanted to know more about the black art of accounting reports). The key Q is... do you want to be good at IT as it relates to accounting software or do you want to be good at using accounting and related software? | davehold (13001) | ||
