2009-02-19 03:19:00 | Hi all, regarding the piece on Campbell live the other night.. They interviewed a company that has an entire office empty in need of programmers. They were offering 40k - 80k For what they were after, alot of programmers filled blogs with thats too cheap for a experienced programmer. Sorry i don't have the link for the interview (will search for it) Iam still a student in programming, but it has occured to me that out of my whole school.. 90% of the class is taking networking and A+..etc.. What's your thoughts on all this also I found this job advertised on the student Job search website... WEBSITE DESIGNER AND PROGRAMMER I need a website made, it will need to have a forum, a main webpage, page to handle credit card payments and a few other things. You can have a team or do it yourself, but you will be paid in total $200. If you develop the website to exactly how I want and in the time period I need I will give an extra bonus of $50. is it a Joke?? www.sjs.co.nz also if anyone has tips on what can take you from being an average programmer to a good one... Iam majoring in Java.. Thanks all in advance....

For your other question: - try and step away from thinking of yourself as a "java programmer", but more of a software developer, read this (www.ericsink.com) - think about learning another programming language (perhaps python or ruby) - have a read of this (www.ericsink.com), and be prepared for constant learning - read some of these (www.codinghorror.com) books, in particular "Code Complete 2" and "The Pragmatic Programmer" |

2009-02-19 03:52:00 | heres the link for the interview on Campbell live... www.3news.co.nz That's quite interesting, I've heard good things about Rimuhosting (the company making the staff shortage claims). Perhaps one of their biggest problems is location, somewhere in Cambridge, perhaps if they were in Auckland or Wellington it might be a different story (that is apart from the lowball salary on offer)

2009-02-19 03:53:00 | Haha, I havent seen the video yet but thats just a joke!! Pretty much all Web Devs I know of will work for $25-50 an hour, with $35-40 being the average. I know a guy who paid $10K just to get a forum setup... Mostly they did a custom skin for it, but yeah .. whilst forums are piss-easy to setup, time is money, and if you know something that somebody else doesnt then that knowledge is valuable if you are performing a service for them. Adding in Credit Card processing requires an SSL Certificate and the rest, so good luck getting that kind of a website done professionally for under $2K I would say. Sure you could probably find somebody, a family friend or whatever who'd "do you a deal" but by n large that persons gonna be sweet out of luck. When I was at Uni for 6 months we were all forced to take Java. It sucked. The teaching sucked, the examples sucked ... I cant program to save myself, yet I managed to teach about 1/3 the class 4 weeks worth of stuff in 5 minutes with proper examples on a single A4 piece of paper. Why am I telling you this? Well basically most of them saw programming as a joke, it was made to look boring, difficult, and not very satisfying. I think there was two or maybe 3 in a class of 30 that were still interested after the first semester. Programmers (Not just web-devs) are still in quite high demand, and command quite a salary too! TradeMe's Salary Guide isnt actually too bad: www.trademe.co.nz Basically if you're offering $40K for a programmer, you probably wont even get a half-skillful student fresh out of Uni for that kind of $$ You should see how many 6-figure jobs are in IT right now: www.trademe.co.nz I dealt with RimuHosting a few years back, top notch company I thought!

2009-02-19 04:03:00 | Well having graduated last year with a degree in I.T. majoring in software development - I can tell you that it is bloody hard to get a job in NZ. Everyone only wants people with 3+ years experience in the industry which sucks eggs. Anyone offering me a job? :)

2009-02-19 04:15:00 | I know the blonde geek girl and her husband (the skinny one with a Miami Vice whisker look and glasses). They moved to Cambridge (from Auckland) about 12 months ago and say that not only is RimuHosting a great place to work, but they are loving Cambridge. Liz was earning pretty good money in Auckland, so the package must have been good... Agree with Chill about what the REAL cost will/should be for the SJS job. I just wish I had some programming skills - my last contract finished at the end of January, and there has been very little, even in permie roles, for Test Analysts since then... Even went to WINZ today (and sat through an hour long waste-of-time seminar - but required, if I want to get back any of the tax I have paid over the last nine years as a contractor)!!! :(
