850590 2010-01-21 19:38:00 according to the info
in this thread
forums.pcworld.co.nz
your PC has a Via KM-266 northbridge.
If that is so you may already have the fastest
possible CPU.
I don't think a dual core is going to fit unfortunately.

unless you upgrade the motherboard as well.

850591 2010-01-21 20:54:00 Yeah even if it did support faster chips, the faster chip in the Athlon XP range is the 2.2GHz 3200+...hardly much of an upgrade.

Personally I think the best upgrade for older PCs is an SSD. You'd be surprised how chirpy they make the old dinosaurs go. Not sure if your mobo has SATA though.

850592 2010-01-22 04:22:00 Not exactly a smart way to spend money though, for the price of a SSD youd get a much better CPU/Mobo combo hueybot3000 (3646)
850593 2010-01-22 06:14:00 SSD's are actually quite slow, most hardrives are faster. not to mention 3-4x the price and half the capacity. tweak'e (69)
850594 2010-01-22 06:42:00 Agree .If I did get an SSD itd be a tiny one just the bare minimum size to boot from/swap from. No point wasting money to store your mp3s, 'My Pictures' on pkm (13527)
850595 2010-01-22 07:02:00 Guys, don't forget the main thing that chokes OS performance - small random write speeds.

Your average HDD clocks about 0.03Mb/s in this department, whereas any decent SSD will get at least 5 - 10MB/s, which equates to a massive improvement in the "feel" of an OS's performance.

Where did you get that information? A cereal box? Seriously if you don't know about it then best not post negatively about it. This may have been plausible with the very first SSD's using not so great JMicron controllers but Intel/Indilinx/Samsung know how to bring the speed. Also SandForce, another unknown company like Indilinx are bringing out an even faster controller with write speeds just as fast as read speeds (250MB/s each way).

Not only are random read/writes faster than a standard HDD but as pablo d pointed out the small random write speeds are what choke a PC. I believe Intel's X25-M has the best speeds in this area, but maybe I'm bias as I actually own one and its faster than my last RAID0 set up.

850597 2010-01-22 12:48:00 so let me get this right, there's no compatible dual core processor out there?
unless I upgrade the motherboard
also can you confirm this an AMD 64 x2 won't fit?
I'm about to put a nvidia 6200 turbocache 256mb from a better computer a can it handle?
h0b0_321 (15568)
850598 2010-01-22 18:01:00 That is correct, there is no dual core that fits your motherboard.
The graphics card may or may not fit, it depends on if
your motherboard has the correct graphics slot.
