| 749773 | 2009-02-21 07:34:00 | I thought I would try it on computer in kids room when AVG was having an update glitch. I asked questions about avg update problems I was having but the haters said install AVAST. I uninstalled AVG, run cc cleaner, downloaded AVAST free, on the install it locked up. For first time in my computer life I couldnt do a blardy thing best I could get was BSOD. Competely trashed OS, got mega computer geek in, said its toast, other people have had problems as well stay with AVG. In the end the hdd wouldnt even boot for format had to fit another one. Once bitten twice shy AVG for me. |

| 749774 | 2009-02-21 07:50:00 | I have avg and avast running on different pc's, no probs with either, I would suspect users playing around with settings or installing for there to be a real issue. | rob_on_guitar (4196) | ||
| 749775 | 2009-02-21 08:00:00 | I used to be an avid fan of AVG, but I switched to Kaspersky because it is less obtrusive and performed better on my Win PC. When a few friends started complaining, I found that AVG v8 was right off the rails with slow performance and many update issues. I switched them to Avast! and all seem happy with it. I am now using Avast! myself, since it is hardly worth having a paid AV service for a PC that probably runs less than an hour a week average. I found Avast! quite satisfactory for my needs, but I definitely prefer Kaspersky for it's low overhead and generally efficient behaviour. |

| 749776 | 2009-02-21 13:29:00 | I reluctantly went with Telecom late last year - but the couple of times I had to call them (setup issues - PEBKAC stuff), they were very good - despite the American accents (Manilla, I believe) at the other end of the phone.... I finally got around to ditching AVG a month or so ago to use Avast. Am still happy I did that. Avast I find less obtrusive. Have also talked with a few call centre staff from Manila, Philippines. They do try to be very helpful. Everything ended up well. Philippines call centre staff working for Telecom are to be trained to talk like New Zealanders, learning slang words and mastering the accent as part of a plan to cut jobs in New Zealand. The company said it would put the new employees through a two-month training session. Once completed, some would sound like "authentic Kiwis". British-based Rob O'Malley, whose company employs more than 3500 call-centre workers in the Philippines, told the Dominion Post the results were often "staggering". "You wouldn't know they are in Manila. You would think they are in an office somewhere in Auckland that's how good they are." Telecom spokesman Mark Watts said the training would also give workers information about New Zealand's customs, geography, education, sports and events. "Call it a crash course in the Kiwi experience," he said. Source: NZPA Misty :) |

But once I changed to avast!'s free version, I found it's automatic updates made that problem go away. I've had no problems at all with it over about 3 years, so I recommend it. |

This thread is getting to be as bad as the Holden Ford debate (both mediocre vehicles in my opinion) If one AV program works for you better than another, just use that one. There is plenty of free choice. I have been using AVG Pro (paid for) for many years and have never had a problem. I have a couple of family members and friends who are basically computer illiterate, that use AVG Free and have no problems, even doing updates on dialup!! I believe it is probably a combination of installed software that interfere with each other that cause most problems. Keep smiling HH |

| 749779 | 2009-02-21 21:56:00 | AVG fine used it for years . Tried AVAST and it was hopeless ended up having to reformat hard drive with the damage it did . Millions of people use it around the world use no problems, problem is in land of the long white cloud where there is group of pressf1 AVG haters always slinging off about it . Sure support may be !@#$ what do you expect its free . People shouldn't use free stuff then complain about it . I can kind of understand that, yet Comodo is free and they provide pretty good support on their forums Except in this case - The customer PAID FOR AVG . Not what you'd expect for something you actually paid money for . And personally, I find it more useless at detecting viruses than Norton Funny you say that - last year a customer of mine was saying, her daughter BROUGHT AVG thinking it would be better than the free one . She had nothing but troubles with it - from what she said, she tried calling them, FINALLY got hold of someone, complained about it not working and since it was the paid version where was the support . According to her, the people at AVG simply said "so what do you want us to do about it - if its not working it must be your computer" Great support . |

| 749780 | 2009-02-21 22:34:00 | When I try to update my AVG I get the following error: UPDATE FAILED General error - not enough free memory, write error. Very frustrating. |

If I were you I would check occassionnaly to make sure your AVG actual has installed the latest updates and has performed any scheduled scans . Because that was one of the reason I ditched AVG . Its front screen says it has performed these tasks, but what it actually does is report when it STARTED an update or scan, not if it actually completed it . I told them about this, and their support staff said there was nothing wrong with that ! To me that is a MAJOR design fault, as thousands of people will be out there thinking it has done those things for months, when in actual fact it has only started them ! |

Two Tuis . However I do agree with the Pom who said the experience was staggering . I have seen users staggering away from their phones . |
