| 749609 | 2009-02-21 04:24:00 | I'm a generational keeper, I still have boxes and drawers of stuff my father collected over the years (he passed away in 1986), which I call on regularly for "useful bits," plus all his tools, and my grandfather's tools as well. I have a large rack of "good bits of wood" under my house that I call on regularly for projects, a box of miscellaneous pieces of metal that proves equally useful, and a vast supply of electronic bits and pieces from thermionic valves days through to integrated circuits. From time to time I have a clear-out and dump a pile of stuff I think I'll never use or need again, which is an automatic signal for the Frustration Fairy to make something fail and the only source for the required part is the dump where I disposed of it the week before!! I often forget what day it is, but I can remember where everything is in my garage and like my father before me, I can pretty much fix anything, which amazes my children because they are from the "damn, it's broke, buy another one" generation whereas I say "give it here and I'll fix it." I have operating systems back to Windows 3.0, Norton Desktop V1.0 and a raft of other old software but I don't keep much in the way of hardware. I do have an old 14.4 modem for old times sake though. | 749613 | 2009-02-21 22:19:00 | hmmm where do i begin an old 80486 cyrix instead based PC 64MB ram several gigabyte range HDD including SCSI1 2gig, IDE 4096MB split in two partitions that DOS 6.22!!! can handle, 518MB, 52x CD reader 5.25" AND 3.5" floppy, 10Mb lan tripple boot, DOS6.22/3.11, 98SE and NT4.0 SP6 all three work well with virtually all the hardware i chuck at it (old stuff of course) an old PII (pentium 2) compaq armada 1750 6636/t/4000 laptop 96MB ram, 18GB hard disk. PCMCIA lan card, single USB, recently cleaned the dust out of the keyboard and tightened its internal screws!! running 98SE i also have: a THORN full transistor black and white TV set, can only get 3 channels, 4 if you include a VCR. a fully working valve radio, several old VHS recorders, toshiba 420CDT, a 25W per channel (stereo) amplifier (anyone remember DIN plugs as a amplifier connector? ;)), an 8086 CPU and 82072 somthing floppy drive controller, several ISA expansion cards, old hard drives, EDO ram, etc etc etc |

| 749615 | 2009-02-22 08:09:00 | Is your favicon the old test pattern? yes, my old compaq has a composite output so i made a program which plays a 1000Hz tone and inserts the date/time and labels so i can run it through a TV or VHS ooo and i also have a CB modulation / field strength meter i scored for $20 |

I still have a box full of old floppies, one I think is one disk of windows 3.1, I keep that because I have a copy of 95 on CD which is the upgrade edition, so I need that floppy for it to install. Also got a couple copies of 98SE floating around. In the garage I've got an old P2, 200MHz I think, with a 400Mb hard drive in it, running '95. Only reason I have it is because it's my only desktop rig. Has a floppy too. Also got an old 3COM superstack 10Mbit switch, 24 port, with 100Mbit Uplink, that also has a Fibre channel add-in card. Only thing wrong with it is a blown fuse. If anyone's interested, PM me (for the switch only). |
