749589 2009-02-20 05:01:00 Just wondered if I am the only one that keeps old hardware/software etc even dead items like old HDD's, CD-Roms, manuals etc.

Examples:- DOS, Win 3.1, their box and manuals etc, 2x CD-Rom, Cards of all sorts, serial cards, ide cards of all sorts scsi etc, cables galore etc etc etc.

Just talking to someone in another thread about it.

I have a heap of big plastic boxes of old stuff I hang on to, I have no idea why I just do.

It has now partially taken over part of a spare room in our house as well.

Anyone else have this "keeping things" obsession or is it just me?

749590 2009-02-20 05:04:00 I've still got original 3.11 / 95 / MS DOS 6.22 floppies here. And 98/98 SE cd's

And Amiga workbench disks, and an Amiga SCSI 20 GB hdd / A590 case (for the hdd)

749591 2009-02-20 05:12:00 I don't go back as far as Amiga Speedy. I did not learn computers until 1990 when I deleted everything off my Wife's work Laptop when we lived in Hamilton. They had to send it down to Head office in CHCH to get it all back up and running again.

I went to Waikato Uni and Tech doing various courses and got myself a computer later that year. A 386 with a 40Mb HDD, which I don't still have, but I do still have all the paperwork, floppy disks and manuals for it.

I do have a copy of Windows 1.0 I downloaded years ago, but I doubt it would run on any of my hardware, so it is just more junk hanging around I guess.

749592 2009-02-20 05:28:00 I think I started in computers in 1985. The first computer I had was a Sega, then the Amiga (till the battery leaked in it). That was the end of that

Then went to PC's (first PC was a 486), which was total crap lol

Then I decided to start building my own.

A P4 2.4 which is still going (but with a different mobo / CPU), because the old one died and fried due to a power surge.

This one (775 pin 4 GB), and a 754 pin (with the help of wainuitech, who sold me the CPU for it).

And the laptop PCuserWinVista gave to me (which is from 1999 or something), but I managed to install XP on it

Thats one thing I didnt do, go to tech / uni. I decided to learn myself

749593 2009-02-20 05:45:00 I have a legit copy of every version of Windows from 95 to 7 (but not 2000) on CD or DVD, plus a 8-disk floppy version of Windows 3.11. I didn't pay for some of them - I think 3.1/95/98 were given to me, along with a 30 disk copy of MS Office 4.3!

I also downloaded Windows 1.0 to a floppy disk - so far I have found it runs on any hardware, as long as it has a floppy drive :D

Got my first computer in 1982 when I was 5 - a ZX81 :p A few years later it was replaced with an an Atari 130XE (yay, 8-bit!), and then in 1990 an Atari STe

Wish I'd held on them now, just for giggles

749595 2009-02-20 06:26:00 I think there is still a Abacus around here somewhere. Driftwood (5551)
749596 2009-02-20 07:47:00 Yeah I am a collector too - lots of old manuals
Every powerbill since I left home in 1970 !
Most of my bank statements
But I chucked out all of my 5.25" floppies a few years ago

I think some of us are just die hard collectors, I hate throwing stuff away in case I "may" want to read it later or look at it !

749597 2009-02-20 07:52:00 I had all of the netguide mags (9-10 yrs worth) till I biffed them lol

I had to go through the rubbish the other day, to find one.

Because Netguide emailed me, saying I had won an Xbox 360 gaming bundle. (Their Monster Xmas Giveaway)

I needed the mag to take the coupon thats in it. To claim it

749598 2009-02-20 08:41:00 If you want to throw away a couple of the dead CDROMs, I'll take them for you. I'll pay for postage, of course. Gonna keep the lower frame to make a budget intake fan bay.

Please PM me. :)
