751595 2009-02-26 09:19:00 Who awarded that contract?

Who had run down the armed forces to the point they are forced to eqiup themselves with rubbish from China?

751596 2009-02-26 09:43:00 Key says it is not easy as the company in Levin sub contracts to a company in Auckland.

I can only think that whatever ( or should that be fockever ) Goverment is elected they still take advice from state servants. They do not get elected in or out.

751597 2009-02-26 09:46:00 Ah I heard about this tonight on the news ... yeah I feel for the company, but (without going into too much details) Im not personally going to just "Buy NZ made" just because its NZ made. If its price / feature competitive, then sure, but if NZ made means its lacking in something or the price is higher, then I s'pose Im just too frugal :p Chilling_Silence (9)
751598 2009-02-26 10:28:00 It may be time to bring back import duties.

That way we will have to start adding value and manufacturing.
If you do not have overseas funds you simply can not buy it.

751599 2009-02-26 10:30:00 The armed forces contracts are just a huge pain in the ass anyway. (Many years ago) I sewed the shoulder pads and linings into Army, Navy and Air Force jackets for Albion Clothing in Christchurch who had the contract then (along with the Police jackets and Air New Zealand cabin crew jackets. The specifications come from the "Army Textile Research Division" or some such place and they are exact to the point of silliness. And the tiniest *tiniest* little thing slightly out of spec and the whole lot is sent back to be unpicked and done over. And we thought that our armed forces were bad - we tried to do a sample for the Australian Navy dress whites and the boss just ended up saying "screw this" to the sample machinists and sent the samples back intentionally below par as the boss just didn't want the grief - the NZ forces were bad enough. 751601 2009-02-26 19:12:00 It's not a level playing field. We can't compete with countries that have unregulated labour markets or wages the equivalent of peanuts so it's time to re-level the playing field and introduce protectionism for what little industry we still have..... andrew93 (249)
751602 2009-02-26 19:37:00 Cheapness will always win.

We still have a defense force?

751603 2009-02-26 19:49:00 Its several companies now. Not just the one.
And they're having the Job Summit today. They need to realise we can't survive just trying to sell milk and sheep to the world.
Utterly pointless if we keep closing businesses here and buying more and more from overseas.
