852102 2010-01-26 04:05:00 I know it is widely discouraged by most PressF1 members to backup anything to DVD RW. However, that is all I have at my disposal at this point in time, and I promise that as soon as my lovely wife allows me the expenditure for an external HDD I will rectify my terrible computing ways.

That said, I have a problem in understanding the various backup options in full. I have purchased Backup4all Professional after reading some good reviews (reliability, ease of use etc.) from various fora and non-commercial sites around the net and now I have a big question over the four options: Full Backup; Incremental Backup; Differential Backup and Mirror Backup. Ok, perhaps not mirror backup as I do not intend to use it.

I understand that I will need to create a log and do a full backup the first time around. From there what happens, say, if I want to backup on the same DVD RW with a Differential backup? Will the original backup be overwritten with the changes only and therefore I will lose the data that has not changed?

I don't know whether I have made much sense here, sorry, do ask some question if you need clarifications.

Thank you for your help in advance.

Seems unlikely. Because a DVD is not a hard drive.
While you can write several times to it, generally you have to erase it first. The program might do a differential backup to it OK but it would add files, not replace existing ones.

That can only be done on an external HDD.

852104 2010-01-26 05:07:00 Thanks for that pctek.

This in essence confirms my theory that I would have to erase and do a full backup every time if I use a dvd rw, am I correct?

Cheers for that pctek, much appreciated.
