2010-01-24 23:03:00 I have just found out WHY it takes longer to get into Win7 (after it shows welcome). This MS site (support.microsoft.com) says it. If you use a solid color for your background, it'll take nearly twice as long to get into windows 7. I tested this, just to check if this were true. And sure enough. I changed the background to a picture. It took 34-35 secs to get into windows. Then I changed the background to a solid color, and timed it again. It took 59.97 secs to get into Windows 7. So, if you're using Win7 x86, and you're currently using a solid background, the above hotfix may help (it doesnt work in 64 bit). I tried. It didnt work. Why the above site has info about x64, I have no idea Speedy Gonzales (78)
2010-01-24 23:15:00 Lol that is crazy. You'd expect it to be a Windows update in the not too distant future. trinsic (6945)
2010-01-24 23:20:00 There is a hotfix, but it only works with 32 bit Speedy Gonzales (78)
2010-01-25 00:22:00 Oops my bad, forgot to click on show all hotfixes. There is a x64 hotfix Speedy Gonzales (78)
2010-01-25 00:27:00 What a random problem!

I haven't seen anyone use a solid color background yet, will keep this in mind though.

2010-01-25 00:30:00 It definitely does take longer if you use a solid color background. I used to use a solid color, before I found this KB. Just going to try this hotfix, to see if that fixes it Speedy Gonzales (78)
2010-01-25 00:44:00 Well, its 13s faster with that hotfix. Think I'll leave a pic on the background Speedy Gonzales (78)
2010-01-25 01:47:00 I've probably never used a single colour background on anything. Unless it's Windows 3.11 on a video card with 256KB VRAM Agent_24 (57)
2010-01-25 01:52:00 Yup well not everyone wants pics. It looks like this is a known issue, according to the windows 7 forum. And obviously, a lot of people aren't happy, getting a performance hit, if they use a solid background. Just tested a few pics, and it depends on WHAT pic you select on how long it takes you to get into windows.

And it looks like this only affects Win 7. But, not Vista. It came up pretty much straight away after it says welcome in Vista

2010-01-25 03:59:00 It just goes to show we are not all the same. It is not a big issue here to wait 13 sec however I had thought it a bit tardy. I find it easier to handle the desktop with solid color; however many thanks for the enlightenment. PENTIUM (426)
