752047 2009-03-01 00:33:00 I have a couple of friends in similar situations, both of whom borrowed to buy their businesses and put their houses up as collateral. They can't afford to close and can't afford to stay open either.

At least I'm not in that situation.

It takes more than just passion Metla.

Its the passion that would motivate you to do what would be required to keep it running, In this case its the exact situation you have described that you wish to avoid, and good on you for making the decision that suits.

I never borrowed for my business and closed when I came to the point of either soldier on at the level I had got to or sink some serious money into the company to take it up a few levels, But then I would have been responsible for the welfare of employees and that's not a situation I wanted to be in, at least not in the PC repair industry.

752048 2009-03-01 02:29:00 Good luck PCtek with working from home. I was made redundant in 1990 in England from my Carpentry job and then went it alone for 10 years of contracting. Have been made redundant here 3 years ago after the building company restructured and I was off having fairly major surgery on my shoulder, they waited until I went back to work first. Joinery company I work for now has just laid off one machinist so fingers crossed I get to keep my job this time. gary67 (56)

752050 2009-03-01 03:28:00 Sorry to hear that PCtek. :(

Hopefully having the shop has given you enough exposure to ensure that your customers will continue to use your services despite the relocation.

752052 2009-03-01 05:25:00 You've been sensible, Helen.
(Hint for new PF1ers that tecs come in both sexes)

$1700 a month in rent is a lot to make up before even thinking about profits - in today's downturn, anyway.

Your work standards will see you bounce back when the time is right, I'm sure.
Word of mouth about expertise & good service ultimately beats any shopfront.

Er..its not $1700 rent. Rent + Power + Phone + Eftpos + Insurance + Net. Not inc ads and misc and purchases.
See, a lot to fork out for a building.
Versus $500 if I go home.

752054 2009-03-01 08:49:00 That's bad luck pctek.
A friend of mine has just closed their business in the last month.
They had 5 offices around the country so a few people out of work there.

We have just taken over the PC client database of the place where I used to work. They are going to concentrate on other parts of the business.
Will be offering a job to the guy who was still working there too.
Hopefully things go well for us as we have put a lot of money into the business in the last two years.

752055 2009-03-01 09:55:00 Hi pctek, when did you last have a holiday. Now is the time! Nothing flash or expensive. Just a change of food, scenery and people. Helps to get rid of a few cobwebs and charge the batteries up, as it were. All the best for the future. BobM (1138)
752056 2009-03-01 21:40:00 One of my suppliers already closed and another is probably going to soon .

Can you say who they are? PM me if you want to keep it off here :o
