751634 2009-02-28 02:05:00 This is what I hate. Cyclists are all "Waaa don't pass me so close, give me 1.5m when you pass me." But then when you're waiting at traffic lights, they're more than happy to get within 1.5m of your vehicle to get to the front of the queue so you have to overtake them again down the road.

****s.

There's a huge difference between a cycle being passed by a vehicle at 50km/h and a cyclist choosing to pass a vehicle stationary at the lights. There is no excuse for passing a cyclist so close you could be accused of getting intimate with him/her...

751635 2009-02-28 03:34:00 Good point there johcar, the rules shouldn't apply to cyclists, only motor vehicles. My bad. roddy_boy (4115)
751636 2009-02-28 03:48:00 The rules should apply to both equally - there is an active promotion called "Share With Care" .

What I'm saying is that when a cyclist scoots up the inside at the lights, that is their choice (to take that risk) .

But when a motorist passes so close that you could touch the car just by extending your fingers without taking your fingers off the handlebars, that is not a choice a cyclist in their right mind would take - they have no control over that situation, and the cyclist is the one who will come off the worst in any incident involving ANY other vehicle .

Unfortunately, the "Rule Of Big" is the one that seems to count on NZ roads - the "Rule Of Big" translates roughly as "I'm bigger than you, so I'll do what I want . So **** off!" .

Have you never been intimidated by a truck and B-Train while driving a car? Same thing .

751637 2009-02-28 11:01:00 I think if cyclist's were to bike towards the traffic then there would be less accidents as motorist's would be less inclined to want to see the person's face burned into their brain to remember that person that they just killed and have flash backs of the image of that person's face hurtling towards them in nightmaries and to wake up in a cold sweet. memphis (2869)
751638 2009-02-28 13:36:00 Don't run into cyclists, they clog the radiator and their bikes scratch the paint. Get a giant can of Raid, and give every one you pass a good squirt.. ;) R2x1 (4628)
751639 2009-02-28 15:31:00 Yea cyclists normally mean you have to clean your smashed windscreen after they fall through it. Grr rob_on_guitar (4196)

Which is exactly how I broke my collar bone, acromium, shoulder blade and five ribs (driver's window though, not windscreen) 18 months ago. :stare:

It's not such a silly idea - it also allows the cyclists to see the oncoming traffic.

751642 2009-03-01 10:16:00 A little counter-intuitive, to ride on the wrong side of the road (for the direction the cyclist is travelling in). Also makes it even less likely that cyclists would stop for red lights, since the lights would all be facing away from the direction of travel.

Interesting concept though...

751643 2009-03-01 10:32:00 Given that a lot of cyclists are already somewhat backward, riding on the wrong side of the road should be as easy as riding on the wrong side of the statistics is now ;)
And stopping for red lights would be enforced by the cross traffic.
