751624 2009-02-27 20:47:00 Spoken like a true bigot, cars ARE the problem

I would have thought that a more accurate description would be "The nuts that hold the steering wheel are the problem".... ;)

You are technically correct especially down here.

751626 2009-02-27 22:02:00 My advice would be to get a new nut sometimes the self locking nylon insert is worn out.
Or the deformed metal self locking nuts lose their locking ability (can hammer it down a bit).
Try locktite, drill hole and fit castellated nut and split pin, drill 1/6" holes in side of nut and steering wheel casting and lockwire the nut.

I have had it up to here with cyclists around Auckland.
They dont obey stop signs or traffic lights, dont wear helmets costing me taxpayer bucks when they hit the road swede first. They ride two abreast or too far out from side of road causing damage to my bus mirrors when I brush past them (by brush I mean the mirror and brackets etc are stronger than the cyclist lol) and take them out. They squeal like a stuck pig when you knock them off their bikes never seen such a carry on.
They must get to work stinky and sweaty and piss off their co workers.
Spending money on a national cycle way wont help us out of depression, tourists arent interested now because of the amount of carbon required to get them from europe to nz and they probaly cant afford it.
I want a 2 lane each way road with median barrier from Kaitaia to Invergigill. If the cyclist want to pedal a metre away from death on the same road no probs just pay for the scrapes you cause on the left side of my coaches.

751627 2009-02-27 22:05:00 A pirate walks into a bar with a steering wheel in his pants. The bartender looks at him and asks, "What's up with the steering wheel?"
Replies the pirate, "Arrr, 'tis driving me nuts."

I was referring to the other nut holding the steering wheel, prefect....

Cyclists don't stop for traffic lights because the lights don't detect them, so they end up having to wait at trafic lights with (often) no other traffic around, waiting for a vehicle to come up from behind them to trip the light sensor. In enlightened countries, there are buttons for cyclists (similar to pedestrian crossing buttons) mounted on handrails, which, after being pressed by a cyclist allow the light phasing to recognise that there is in fact a cyclist waiting. These are being trialled in Auckland at the moment - there is one at the Te Atatu off-ramp and another at Western Springs, both on the north-western motorway cycleway.

I'm not condoning the crashing of a red light, just explaining the reason.

Then again, there are idiots who ignore them anyway - but you get car (and bus) drivers like that too.

I have absolutely no sympathy for any cyclist who rides without a helmet, having had my swede saved by one when I was knocked off by a hit-and-run motorist about 18 months ago.

Cyclists are allowed to ride two abreast (www.landtransport.govt.nz) (bullet points 5 and 6). But I agree, it is inconsiderate when the traffic is more than 'light'. Our group only rides two abreast on country roads where the traffic is non-existent. When a vehicle comes, we 'single-up' to let the vehicle(s) past - as per bullet point 6.

Cyclists need at least 1.5m between them and passing traffic. This allows the cyclist a little personal space (everything else on the road can easily kill or maim a cyclist) and gives following traffic some comfort room too, when a cyclist has to swerve for broken glass (very common at the side of the road) or an idiot motorist opening their driver's door without looking back.

From your comments about knocking off cyclists, one could assume that you drive for Ritchies - easily the worst bus drivers in Auckland (with only a few exceptions)!! You'll be laughing on the other side of your face (maybe from inside a prison cell) if you end up killing a cyclist. But from previous threads, you are probably not driving public transport-type buses

If you don't like them scraping your bus, don't drive so close to them - toot to let them know you're there, let them move left, then pass when there is sufficient room. NOT on a corner! It's a hell of a lot easier to throw a coat of paint on the side of a bus than to be dragged through the courts for Careless Use or Manslaughter...

Cyclists would only cause the scrapes on the side of your bus if they were overtaking you and they hit you. I suspect (from your comments above) that this is not the case. If you are overtaking a cyclist so aggressively/impatiently that their pedal scrapes your paint - that's your fault, not the cyclist's. However it does become the cyclist's problem when you smash their $3000-$8000+ bike.

IIRC, an overtaking vehicle is at fault if a collision occurs with the vehicle being overtaken. Same reasoning as used if you run into the back of someone who stops suddenly.

Many workplaces now provide shower facilities - so the stinky and sweaty arrival is easily remedied.

Agree with you about the cycleway the length of the country - waste of time and money in today's world. It's just 'make-work'...

751629 2009-02-27 22:56:00 I would like to see buses and cars really pay for the damage they cause and not just some token gesture. I agree cyclists do need to obey the road rules and the cops here are cracking down on non helmet wearers finally. Boy racers cause more problems than cyclists. I would like to see real cycle ways totally away from the traffic as the idiot car, bus and truck drivers are all blind, how the hell they ever got their licence or keep it beats me. I shower at work as does everyone I know who cycles to work. I don't do it out of some misguided idea of being green but due to wanting to pay off my mortgage quicker so spending less on fuel helps that. We have 4 years on the mortgage and expect to pay it in 2. It's the inconsiderate idiots who don't give other road users room to manoeuvre that causes the problems, after all you wouldn't scrape another vehichle so what do you think gives you the right to kill a cyclist?

See if you can give a real reason not some fart a$%e only in your tiny mind answer

This is what I hate. Cyclists are all "Waaa don't pass me so close, give me 1.5m when you pass me." But then when you're waiting at traffic lights, they're more than happy to get within 1.5m of your vehicle to get to the front of the queue so you have to overtake them again down the road.

****s.

751633 2009-02-28 01:36:00 I agree Roddy they shouldnt queue jump, they make my blood boil when they do that at the lights. Although I have seen people reach over and open their left side door and snot them.
Yep the 1.5 metre rule should apply to them as well if they break the rule they should be fined heavily.
For some unknown reason to me cyclists seem to think they own the road well they dont pay anything to its upkeep.
Like I said before you want to see how indignant they get when a vehicle knocks them off their bikes they act like kindergarten age kids.
