752299 2009-03-01 10:32:00 I had a Remingtom foil shaver once - but after a while the foil wore out and it was stupidly expensive to get a replacement. Then I got a Braun foil shaver and the foil didn't wear out - but only because it was much thicker than the foil had been on the Remington and therefore less effective at shaving. Deane F (8204)

I don't have an issue with the foil on the braun, and it is far closer than the philips, however I do have the top of the line model that autocleans itself - digital display etc. The cheaper ones look like the use a totally different foil system. I guess it is a case of you get what you pay for.

752302 2009-03-02 22:22:00 It looks as though Braun is a pretty good bet.
Funny enough I think it is one of the few brands I haven't tried before.
So now I will have a look at some - I think the local Farmers have them in stock.
Thank you all for the helpful comments.

752303 2009-03-02 23:28:00 Thomas01, come back here and tell us what you bought and if it is any good. I plan to upgrade my 20 yr old Philips rotary shaver sometime and would like a decent rechargeable shaver but one that does not require expensive blade renewals every year or two. My old shaver still has 2 of the 3 original rotary blades in it, the other one I replaced around 6 yrs ago, and I have replaced the rechargeable batteries twice. It still works OK but new shavers are not so noisy, cut closer and quicker. I bought the shaver in the States and it had "self-sharpening blades" on the box; today there is nothing like that since companies know it is more profitable to make parts wear out so users have to buy more. 752304 2009-03-02 23:35:00 Tom, I have had a beard for 40 years or so, so it is that long since I used an electric razor...

For what it is worth then, my last electric razor was a Braun, and it was about a million times better than a Philishave rotary shaver. I thought that the only Philishave razor I ever used was so appalling that it would go off the market about 40 years ago, but for some bizarre reason it has survived.

Braun had a really good foil in those days, but it was over 40 years ago that I bought it... You had to treat it really carefully when cleaning because it was so thin you could buckle it. However, it cut much closer than any other razor on the market at the time, and it never created a rash.

I think Cotters Electrical in ChCh may be the NZ agent for them - http://www.cotters.co.nz/ Ooerr, I notice they have a Braun razor that dispenses conditioner as well as cutting your whiskers!

752305 2009-03-02 23:40:00 Depends on how tough you growth is. Some are fine with wispery wiskers but stall on a 'real mans' 3 day old stubble. :banana:banana

Panasonic 'Linear'(very hard to get in NZ) is great for dealing to a 3 day growth
Fast , but a bit noisy :runs at 13,000 rpm (yes).

752306 2009-03-07 04:36:00 I use a manual razor. I have a Mach 3 I think. Didn't get the Fusion since it requires batteries. A set of 4 razor blades last me a good 3 months I think or more. I shave 4 times a week, Friday is casual wear day which I also don't shave.

Are Fusion that much better?

It might be a older blade but the issue I have is around the chin area difficult to get a close shave.

Have not used a electric shaver in 10yrs.

On a flipside. I just bought a cheap nostril clipper (electric) :D not pretty having those stick out. But I have thick coarse hair and also in that spot. Some people say if you are v strong / strong willed, and stubborn you get them .... :p Those are near 3cm (!) but I still cannot grow sideburns.

752307 2009-03-07 06:18:00 I bought a Philips Soft Touch XL about 20 months ago. It was pretty expensive but I will be retiring soon and wanted it to last.

What I have found is:
(1) it gives a great very close shave easily

but :annoyed: :annoyed:
(2) the little side cutters for trimming sideboards or neck hair are so small as to be relatively useless. For that I use my old Remington shaver.

(3) the plastic protective cover had been broken at the corners in the shop and I did not get around to doing anything about it for a long while. I was going overseas to asked Harvey Norman (who I had originally bought it from) to get a new one. It took them eight months to get it......despite repeated and regular reminders, cost me $29, ...and though I was very careful with it the protective cover broke again in just over one/two months !

752308 2009-03-08 08:20:00 Well, the razor blades are so expensive. I decided to get a Fusion Power to see how it is like. The shaver + one blade was cheaper than 4 Mach 3 blades :D

Gilette has discontinued their exchange promotions. I remember I got the Sensor in 1995 at High School for free, then I got the Mach as a free exchange at the supermarket and then the Mach 3. The M Power and Fusion series don't seem to be free anymore.

I have a Philishave from 1995 or such. I used it today for a quick shave before I went out. It doesn't appear to give me a refreshing shave or make my skin softer.
