751604 2009-02-26 19:55:00 Why don't we contract out our defence to the Chinese?
Think of all that taxpayer money we would save.

751607 2009-02-26 20:36:00 Key says it is not easy as the company in Levin sub contracts to a company in Auckland.........

The contract was via a procurement agency in Australia.

True. And it is the Australian company who is outsourcing to China, thereby cutting out the Levin sub contractor.

However, the question still remains why the Defence Force contracted an Australian company in the first place. I suppose it has to do with CER, but if we already had the capacity to complete the contract internally via Swazi, why outsource? Why pay the extra to the Aus company for their profit?

I remember when I think it was the first non NZ contract for dpms and the change away from john bulls happened. There was bit of an outcry from the soldiers as the uniforms we recieved were made of flimsy material and made for Aussies climate, not ours. The material also ripped very easily which was a pain. We need uniforms that can handle snow and sunshine in the one day, we had them, our old uniforms were awesome, but now Im glad i wont be in to see this new stuff. Chinese uniforms are even worse then the aussie ones.

751610 2009-02-27 02:00:00 It's not a level playing field. We can't compete with countries that have unregulated labour markets or wages the equivalent of peanuts so it's time to re-level the playing field and introduce protectionism for what little industry we still have.....

LOL....how does that saying go?.....If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys......!

751611 2009-02-27 02:11:00 It all comes back to Roger Dickless and his gutless mates who let him walk all over them in the 1980's Labour Govt. This especially includes Phill Gooff who was Roger's henchman.

They introduced a "purer" model of market economics than any other country in the world, and opened our borders to everything going. Not even the homes of market economics (Reagan's America and Thatcher's England) got rid of all their protectionism. We are probably the most vulnerable country in the world to protectionism by other countries, yet we opened our borders without any sensible restrictions, and now the Labour chickens are coming home to roost as all of our productive companies outsource labour (now there is an irony, isn't it?).

Act wants to go even further.

751612 2009-02-27 02:20:00 We have to stop selling our companies etc to overseas companies (in the Swazi case) Australia as they have no loyalty to NZ.

Eg a few years ago I was doing a bit of fund raising for a charity. I rang a greetings card company in Auckland who said they were now owned by an Australian company.

I phoned the Australian head office and the very nice lady told me that they don't donate outside Australia ! (whereas most NZ companies will donate to NZ charities)
