I lived in Wanganui a while back.

Has the council got it right?

750972 2009-02-24 05:46:00 Didn't we do this once before?

Anyway, The people of Wanganui have it right, Whatever they want is what it is. The council is following the will of the people, so there is no question as to whether they have it right or not.

750973 2009-02-24 05:52:00 There was a referendum on this very isuue. Not laong ago. 80% were for Wanganui...no H. PJ Poppa John (284)
750974 2009-02-24 06:07:00 I asked for a number of reasons.

1. I lived in Wanganui some years back. 21 Maketu St before I went to secondary School.

2. I went to Wanganui East School rather than Whanganui East School

3. I visited Ratana Pa as a school child.

4. Ken Mair is as about as Maori as I am!

5. If the majority of people would like to leave the name of the town without the "h" then they should be able to do so.

6. The last reason I would put forward at this time is I would need to download new maps for my portable GPS car unit. I do not now how to spell Whanganui for the City at this time.

750976 2009-02-24 08:29:00 Its not Wanganui that brings this crap up, Its out of town pratts, and a certain group of racists who believe they have a say in everything no matter what it is or how unrelated it is to them purely due to the hue of their skin, even if its whiter then it is brown. Some people do care. And some of those people actually live there. I care for example, even though I do not currently live in Wanganui.

You may not care about what happens in Wanganui much like I do not give a toss about what happens in Auckland.

Perhaps you should say that some people in Wanganui should shut up.

All the people in New Zealand did not give the Government of the day the mandate to change New Zealand to Aotearoa or to change Mt Egmont to Mt Taranaki or to change Mt Cook to Aoraki. I am fully aware by the way that Maori is an official languange in New Zealand and may be used in Parliament or in a Court of Law.

You do have a right to your opinion and I personally thank some of our forefathers, Allies and ancestors that I do not happen to have Japanese or German as an official language as a current official language in New Zealand at this time.

750978 2009-02-24 09:04:00 When I lived in Wanganui - 80% of the people opposed any change of any type, even improving the main street, upgrading sewerage scheme etc etc. If you ever got it changed to Whanganui. you'd know 80% would oppose it being either changed back or changed to any other name.

Is it ignorance or apathy? I don't know and I don't care.

750980 2009-02-24 19:43:00 I see the local council last nite decided to keep the existing spelling. Now wait for the crys of racism to come from the local tribe, the Maori party and all their liberal hangerons.. paulw (1826)
