2010-01-25 05:21:00 | Hey! Just wondering which ISPs actually require a username/password in the router config . I used to think Xtra doesn't (unless you want your static IP) but Orcon does, this was until yesterday . I plugged in a friends router to my network (Orcon connection), and by the time I managed to log in to the web console the router had authenticated and was working on the Internet, with xtra's username/password in the config . This same router is not working on his Xtra connection though, but it gets an ADSL sync (CHAP is also successful according to the logs) . Other routers work fine . Any ideas on this? I've tried different cables and username/password but still nothing . Its a Belink router and I've updated the firmware . Stopped working after xtra accidentally disconnected/reconnected his Internet account . Any help appreciated . Thanks, Gregor

Telstra Cable doesn't as you have a static IP address, and it works from the Modem you rent from them. Thats why with Telstra Cable if the modem blows you cant simply go and attach another like you can with ADSL, the modems MAC address is matched to the IP address. I've seen Belkins do some strange things -- Have you reset the Settings back to Factory, and re - entered the details in. |

2010-01-25 07:31:00 | Why should a modem/router connected to a phone line require a user name or password? It can only be used on that phone line, unlike wireless which, if not protected, could be used by thr neighborhood. | mzee (3324) | |
2010-01-25 07:35:00 | There was a comment somewhere on this forum (maybe from adslgeek?) saying that in recent years, Telecom has moved from a system which required a username/password, to one which associates a given phone line with a particular account - and thus doesn't require authentication. | somebody (208) | |
2010-01-25 07:38:00 | Every one I have set up in at least the last six months still required a Username and password in the modem/Router. | wainuitech (129) | |
2010-01-25 08:14:00 | As it happens I just changed the firmware in my DSL302G. I expected to have to re enter my username and password Went into admin and found that the user name was user@xtra.co.nz and the password was blank. However it still connects.

2010-01-25 08:16:00 | From the info I have, as the cabinets are being upgraded to ADSL2+ they are also rolling out line-based authentication, such that the basic services assigned to the line are available on the line regardless of user-level authentication. However, any account-level functions (assigned static IPs, or any other such features) require user-level authentication to function. | inphinity (7274) | |

2010-01-25 19:21:00 | Went into admin and found that the user name was user@xtra . co . nz and the password was blank . . Which is still a username and password . Telecom has always had a variation on that . It's their "test" one . Yes it works but as has been said, you wouldn't get their full functions with that one . The username/password is for more than just the initial connection . Emails for instance . . . . . . . . . .
