752403 2009-03-01 01:44:00 How do you clean the fat traps in a rangehood? I tried washing them in the sink with dishwashing liquid, but that wasn't terribly effective. Greven (91)

752405 2009-03-01 01:53:00 I use a hose outside to get most of the oil out of the filter by force. Then soak it in dishwashing powder (i.e. the stuff used in dishwashers) with very very hot water for a few hours, rinse, and repeat. somebody (208)

be careful with if oven cleaner method is used espically if your filters are aluminum. Oven cleaner tends to dissolve aluminum

And if it doesn't dissolve it it changes it from a nice shiny silver to a dull metal colour. :(

The hot water and detergent method is what I have used but with my current rangehood I can now put them in the dishwasher.

Washing them often before they get all gunked up is a good idea too.

752412 2009-03-01 03:57:00 I don't have a dishwasher :(
The previous owners of my current flat never cleaned the rangehood & I didn't think about the filters until today, so they are in a really bad state. Boiling Water & detergent cleaned the outside layers of the filter, but there is still a lot of fat trapped in the inside layers.
