853553 2010-01-30 04:37:00 The DVD RW drive on my HP laptop will not allow me to access any CD or DVD for any reason.

I can insert a CD and close the drive but as soon as I want to access the CD the drive ejects the CD. It brings up a small window that says, "Insert a disc."

It would be great if I could use the drive to install a programme but it does not want to co-operate.

It is a HP Pavilion dv6000 running Vista.

Thanks for your help.

853554 2010-01-30 06:26:00 Corrupt driver for the drive? Drive died? does this happen with all discs, what happens if you try a boot disc such as a live linux does it still kick it out upon restarting and trying to boot from the disc? gary67 (56)
853555 2010-01-30 07:14:00 I have no idea if the driver is corrupt or the drive has died. How does one tell?

I assume that the drive has not died as it can be opened, closed and there is a negative reaction when I try to access any disc.

I do not have a boot disc. I'm not certain I know what a boot disc is.

It does it with all discs. No exceptions.

853556 2010-01-30 07:16:00 Maybe it doesn't like the taste of them :p

Start up in safe mode, see if it still does it with the CD / DVD's

853557 2010-01-30 07:18:00 Have you checked in device manager for any exclamation marks on the drive? Sweep (90)
853558 2010-01-30 07:45:00 Could also be Vistas CD burning feature - have a look at This article (www.tipandtrick.net) to disable it - make sure you make a restore point first since you will playing in the reg.

The above link is the solution from the Auto Eject in Vista (www.tipandtrick.net)

853560 2010-01-31 02:38:00 Is it an H P laptop out of guarantee. Laptop DVD units are not very robust and can get the sulks. Pricey to replace, which was my 'fix it' guess when reading your first posting. PENTIUM (426)
