852349 2010-01-26 23:33:00 I am currently cleaning the inside of my parents computer out before I reinstall it and I discovered that there is no intake or exhaust fan on it. Would it be a good idea to install some before I put it back together?
It has spaces for 2 8cm fans.

852350 2010-01-26 23:58:00 Is it a 2.8ghz overclocked quadcore or a VIA Eden 5 watt 600mhz?

If it has no history of over heating I wouldnt add any unless I needed something to do.

Is it a tower?top of the case near the PSU?

To give you an idea we run HP dc7100/7600 2.8 p4 with HT and the SFF models have a large fan at the front~120mm very slowly running, with a loose plastic duct, cpu heatsink, then a smaller 80mm fan on the far side.

852353 2010-01-27 00:09:00 Sorry yeah it is a tower with the psu near the top. Ok well this pc has no fans apart from the one on the cpu and the one in the psu. nedkelly (9059)
852354 2010-01-27 00:22:00 I have an old desktop lying around, PSU at the top. And no case fans. Only fans are the CPU and PSU

If you have some spare fans lying around it probably wouldn't hurt not to install. But if it's not dying from overheating I wouldn't bother buying some

852355 2010-01-27 00:29:00 I would put at least one fan, either as intake or outtake. If intake put a dust filter on it as dust build-up will become a problem later down the track. qazwsxokmijn (102)
852356 2010-01-27 02:06:00 The better the cooling, the longer it will live.

Put the fans in if you want to, but be prepared for extra noise and possibly more dust intake...

852357 2010-01-27 02:06:00 can't hurt to put some in. cooler components are longer lasting components. pablo d (15490)
852358 2010-01-27 02:28:00 Yep I think its a square relationship - double the temperature , reduce lifetime by 4x. Ofcourse itl be obsolete and just toxic waste in a few years. pkm (13527)
