753208 2009-03-04 07:25:00 Hopefully something will happen soon - as I mentioned earlier in this thread - I had written to Ted Gibbons - another thread about the same topic is in the help forum- but just in case no one has read it ---

Following on from the other post in the Chat - Stu post # 3 Suggested writing to the powers to be - So I thought BUGGER it - I did.

Mr Gibbons replied - without putting the whole reply - It was short - but the key point >>>

We have a report due Monday so I’m hoping we’ll get some action then.

They know about it - so if something is not done soon they will find lots more of the people who offer help will also disappear.

Jan has offered to take emails - so get typing and send a mail - other wise don't complain.

753209 2009-03-04 10:29:00 It's just the nature of free message boards .

Unless you want to start paying for them (open cup-holder, insert Visa card, close cup-holder and press the Any key) you're going to encounter ads .

Can't say I agree with that statement, I belong to many other forums and I haven't paid to belong to one yet, and you aren't showed with obnoxious ads .

I don't agree . It costs nothing to install an ad blocking program . Which I do, and so every site gets their ads blocked . I don't care who wants how much money from me, I'll be fair and block everyone's ads :D

753210 2009-03-04 10:51:00 I just sent an email to Jan Birkland.

I said I am going to stay away from Press F1 for 2 weeks, to save my sanity.

See you in 2 weeks guys

Fan-freakin-tastic.

753211 2009-03-04 18:25:00 Seriously; I've seen warez sites/forums with less advertising than this computer-help forum. Ironic really

You're right.

753212 2009-03-04 21:07:00 Agent_24, you appear to be missing the point.

Its great you're tech-savvy and have the know-how to do such a thing, however the reason many people first come here is because theyre not quite as tech savvy as the regular gurus. I direct people to here who dont know how to send more than 1 attachment per-email, they certainly dont have the know-how to install adblocking software.

I wonder if Jan is getting bored of the hate-mail yet, hope he doesnt take it all to heart...

753213 2009-03-04 22:33:00 You're right - I don't think about that (and probably a lot of the time).

I just tried the forum with ads, load time increased by 8 seconds for me

What got me was the three big square ads right at the top. They just take up too much room. Can't even see the top of the thread.

753214 2009-03-04 23:16:00 Jan, rather than send you an e-mail I suggest you print the responses to this thread as an opinion on the current state of these forums . What seems to come out of the discussion is that anybody with experience uses ad blocker programs to cull the ads . The forums are not however solely for experienced users, but as a place for new users to solve problems and get hints and tips . Over the few years I have been posting, we have had a really good community going, to the extent that some gatherings of members have taken place . We feel we know our regulars personally, and are saddened when their comments no longer appear . Discussions have been wide ranging, from aeroplanes on treadmills, to new tyres, front or rear . Good stuff! What I find disturbing though, along with the disappearing members, is the new members who NEVER post .

Fairfax must be aware that a large number of people who use the forum are PC World readers, and see these forums as an extension service of the magazine, which is not unreasonable . Let's not scare people away by drowning everything in a flood of advertisements, especially those which force the discussion off the bottom of most screens . I am sure that well placed ads, in moderation, would be accepted by all .

I would rather gouge my eyes out with a rusty spoon than use a forum which does that
