852803 2010-02-15 04:09:00 Shock-Horror  (Insert strong language of your choice here!!)

I have just found that the damned plug from the adapter into the HDD is not polarised!! I thought it was, because I tried it twice and it only seemed to fit one way. However, while playing around with it a few minutes ago I found that it will go in the other way around just as easily if you line it up carefully enough.

So how do I know which way is which? If I was wrong before, I've possibly stuffed it, but if I was right, turning it over will probably stuff it too.

I think that previously I installed it with the label side down because that seemed to be the only way it would go in. Now I have it label side up per photo below.

Any opinions welcome, including whether connection reversal
might have kumara'd the disk. :(

Cheers

However, you'll never know unless you try!

Yes, it does thanks, it confirms that I had the drive the wrong way around, and counter-intuitively, the motor and logic supplies are on the opposite side of the adapter to the 3.3 volt regulator.

This means that I was putting 3.3 volts into pins 3 & 4 instead of 41 & 42. The former are designated as pins C & D on the jumper list and are for slave drive configuration. If that was a jumper instead of a logic connection then maybe the drive hasn't been fried by my mistake.

I don't know whether HDD jumpers connect to internal logic in the drive or externally to the computer but the drive enclosure is functioning OK with its original drive so maybe there's a chance I haven't done the mini-disk any further harm.

Opinions welcome, but about the drive only please, I have already looked in the mirror to see what kind of idiot I am...........:help:

Son seems remarkably relaxed still, especially after he found that, knowing his casual attitude to data protection, I had done a full backup of his MP3 player to my external storage drive some time back, which limits his losses a little.

Found this on the web:

Re: 2.5' Toshiba HDD Drive i have done a reverse connect on these with no damage

Hook 'er up and tell us the news!

I'm hoping there is diode protection on the DD7/DD8 logic inputs, but since I don't want to cause collateral damage to my own system (the external drive enclosure) I'm going to wait and see if anybody here has knowledge of this. I don't trust a single comment on the web that might have been bullshlt.

I trust PF1'ers much more than I would random geeks on the net.

I'd also like to think that in electing to use a non-polarised connector, Toshiba would provide some protection against the inevitable reverse connection.

852809 2010-04-21 23:58:00 And the good news is.............

After getting my own computer problems out of the way, all of which coincidentally started when I was trying to recover this data, I returned to the i-River disk problem this morning and was pleased to find that reverse connection of the mini-disk adapter had not harmed the latter at all, despite the 5>3.3 volt regulator getting stinking hot. I then plugged in the HDD and found that it too had survived.

Not only that, but the disk was ok in the data sense as well and I was able to transfer all of his music off onto other media.

Nice to report a happy ending. :)

Son doing regular back-ups now?

Son doing regular back-ups now?

Surely you jest?

At present he thinks I'm the equivalent of the Japanese Divine Wind or something, instead of the usual bag of hot air. I get tired of telling him 'I told you so".

Which reminds me, once I get my autorun issue sorted I'll be attacking his laptop and desktop too, to protect my system. I've had our network down since the old box crashed and I'm seriously questioning the wisdom of putting it back up and him back on again.

Cheers
