752414 2009-03-01 05:52:00 How do you clean the fat traps in a rangehood?

Eeeew. You make someone else do it.

Nah seriously you need super hot water to help melt it, and a goldilocks scrubber or something for major gunk and then some BAM Degreaser. Not the other stuff - has to be the degreaser.

You spray it all over it and leave it for 1/2 hour, then come back and wipe it all off.
Then do your dishwashing thing last.

752415 2009-03-01 10:22:00 My local garage has a steam cleaner. Saw the mechanic cleaning a local fish & chips vent filter out. Quick & squeaky clean. No mess to clean up at home either. BobM (1138)

Advise the Dragon that there is a problem in her department. Retire to tidy up any unconsumed beer cluttering the fridge.
What problem?
Yeah, Right.

752417 2009-03-02 02:31:00 It's the dishwasher powder that does the job .

This powder must not contain soaps or detergents that lather in dishwashers . That would cause cavitation and ruin the pumps . I believe the powder is the nearest thing to the old fashioned caustic soda that is available today .

Leave the filters to soak overnight - I have surprised even commercial cleaners with the success of this method although I would have thought they should be aware of it themselves .

Ordinary detergents are almost useless - the steam method is probably the best - if available . But if you use the method above - keep your hands out of the liquid and preferably use gloves .

Just like the warnings on fireworks: "Light touchpaper and stand well clear." - most likely several hundred metres away in this instance.

What do you think this is? Thrill seekers?
Several hundred metres indeed ! I think not.
She is at a marginally safe 9,800 Km range at present, but I still feel a bit nervous at those brave remarks. More might be better. She is also well and truly away from any internet opportunities, so that helps my nerve a bit. ;)

This would be my choice in the absence of a decent degreaser.
