752653 2009-03-02 05:06:00 Ok, here goes,

My workmate has come up with an idea for a website and basically wants to know what it's going to cost to set up .

The idea is this:

The site would contain a webcam image of a coastal location and would update the image say once every minute . Also surf and fishing conditions would be available in text format . It would be updated twice a day and would feature forecasts and current weather conditions .

Obviously not much thought has gone into this so far, but this is where the idea is at at the moment .

This is how I think it would work:

A web server would run at his batch 24/7, with the webcam and a weather station attached . They would send data to the web server .

That's as far as I have got so far!

Thoughts / comments appreciated .

752654 2009-03-02 05:13:00 Or have the web server kept in a datacenter by the hosting provider and just have a light-weight pc/laptop taking snaps of the webcam/temperature readings at the bach and uploading those to the webserver (ftp/scp etc by a scheduled script). dyewitness (9398)
752655 2009-03-02 05:26:00 That sounds like a better idea. Keep them coming! pine-o-cleen (2955)
752656 2009-03-02 05:59:00 once you have a camera setup and a way of wirelessly uploading (assuming your bach is away from cities etc) there would be only the tiny cost of web hosting.

to pay a web designer to set this up wouldnt be much either, you basically need 2 scripts
1. Autop upload the image
2. To easily edit weather conditions

Id have a crack at it but itd be new stuff to me, PM if keen

I wouldnt have a server setup in a remote location, you want the best speeds possible form the server but it wouldnt matter so much how quick the speed between the camera and the server was

752659 2009-03-02 07:04:00 Nope! He's relying on me. I have only ever created one website and I really did bluff my way through it. pine-o-cleen (2955)
752660 2009-03-02 07:08:00 so it would need to be set up in a blog like format hueybot3000 (3646)
752661 2009-03-02 07:12:00 Dude, your full of good ideas! pine-o-cleen (2955)
752662 2009-03-02 07:13:00 oh im a thinker alright.

how much is this guy willing to spend? settin a wireless link between server and camera could cost a wee bit. id guess you would need an internet connection.

Anyone have any ideas that would eliminate the need for internet?
