| 1448849 | 2018-04-24 23:45:00 | We are planning on taking a trip up north in our motorhome from Auckland to Cape Reinga. We were thinking of taking a few days to travel there, stopping off at beaches and scenic spots along the way. We thought that we would travel up SH12 through Dargaville, turn off to Rawene and take the ferry across the Hokianga Harbour then travel up the road to Ahipara and from there to Kaitaia where we would then travel up SH1. As we have not been up the road to Ahipara before we were wondering what the road was like. Is there anyone who has been up there recently that can let us know? Our motorhome is only a small one, built on a Transit van so it's quite easy to drive. Thanks for your help. |

| 1448852 | 2018-04-25 10:12:00 | I traveled around the western side about 10 years ago and it was barren land, and lengthy windy barren beaches. I grew up a bit in Whangarei. Better the other (eastern) side - some nice bays - I been to them all for many years - Rangiputa, Kari Kari, Taupo Bay Taipa, Matapouri, Mangonu,i Totara North, Whangaroa (has deep harbour - easily catch large fish of the wharf), Russell, Tutukaka. Pararua Bay - The nook camp ground was a nice spot to camp up there. Head through Glenbervie from Whangarei - towards Nunguru beach/bay - then follow the coast northwards. Can cut short by travelling across west side., e.g. through Hikurangi... | kahawai chaser (3545) | ||

I'd fully endorse going up one coast, and down the other coast, and I'd pick to start on the West coast, when you're more fresh. It's ages since I've read anything bad about the car breakins that used to occur at the Waipoua Forest (Tane Mahuta walk), but it used to be a regular car crime spot. Lock up, take all valuables with you, leave nothing in sight on the seats. There may be a Ranger based up there now, so that might have put a dent in the car break-ins. |

I spent a fair bit of money on my new smart phone and I don't think it is worth it. I told it I wanted a cup of coffee and a piece of fruit cake and the stupid thing just sat there and did nothing. Told my son about it and he said "I told you to get an iPhone Dad" 😁 |
