1448548 2018-04-18 00:34:00 How soon after being caught by a speed camera does the infringement notice arrive? I'm just wondering how long before I can breathe a sigh of relief (or not).

I think I got pinged by a mobile camera on Friday afternoon on the long straight going past Ruakaka up to the Marsden Point roundabout. Frustrating actually as I'm pretty careful about keeping to the speed limit these days, but I'd been caught for ages behind a large dawdling campervan and overtook on the long straight at just the wrong time.

And then to add to the misery I collected what sounded like a large rock on the windscreen. It started off as a chip but rapidly developed into a long crack. All covered by insurance, but still something you could do without. It is actually the first time in about 50 years I have actually had an impact large enough to require a windscreen replacement, so I suppose I can't really complain. Hell of a scary when it happens though. On the plus side looking at the windscreen made me realize my first WOF on the car is due at the end of May - something I hadn't been remotely thinking about.

1448549 2018-04-18 00:44:00 I'd give them about a week to get the letter through to you.
It's a plain, virtually unmarked envelope they use.

I don't know how common the habit is around NZ, but the Auck/Whangarei leg is often 'trapped' with cameras at the end of overtaking lanes.
There's also the nonsense of overtaking lanes that enter into corners that shouldn't really be tackled at 100kmph.

On balance, it all seems kind of contrary to safety.

They also have a stealthy spot for radar cars on the north side of Dome Valley. By the time you see them you're pinged. If you see them at all.

From experience. That damn camera at the bottom of the Wainui Hill ...

And I think I got pinged by the one at the top last week. Had a lot on my mind, and just crested the hill and looked at the speedo and said "oh Golly!".

Its actually easy to do, but also funny to watch -- most people know where the "ping" area is ;) coming over the top from lower Hutt, off the accelerator, coast past, then many speedup again. Was behind a cop yesterday, going down the hill, the warning sign that says slow down is set to trigger at 80, Cop triggered it tisk tisk.

Sometimes the little dicks go screaming up / down obviously doing way over the limit, wonder if they ever pay the fines ? Had one yesterday, I was right on 80 ( behind the cop who was further down the hill) some clown went past me like I was going backwards. Then they saw the cop just going around the bend ----opps

1448552 2018-04-18 01:39:00 Infringement notices arrive in a plain envelope 7/10 days later

If you request photo proof it arrives in a envelope with Police written all over it

They are not supposed to hide them, but putting them at the end of passing lanes is not really any kind of trap. The speed limit is the same passing lanes or not, if you choose to go faster to get past that's a conscious decision to ignore the law which is after all what speed cameras are supposed to be stopping. Lot's of people use passing as a justification for speeding and I understand the reasoning, especially when you've been stuck behind some annoying vehicle for a while, but it's still not legal. If you can't pass safely without speeding, then legally you can't pass. If you get caught there's no use grumbling about it because it's your own fault.

It feels like a dirty trick putting them there, but stopping people racing to pass someone when there really isn't room seems like quite a legitimate use of a speed camera to me when I consider it.

The frustrating thing was that it was about the only point in the whole trip from Auckland to Kerikeri where I went more than a couple of kph over the limit. Tony (4941)
1448556 2018-04-18 03:11:00 I was just talking in general, not specifically aiming that at you.

I got pinged a couple of times doing 61 in a 50 when I moved to my current address. Took about a week to turn up, and taught me a lesson.
It's a longish straight section of road that's fairly busy and traffic tends to flow a little faster than it should and they used to hide the camera between some trees and a small building.

These days I watch my speed more, and they park the van in plain sight on the other side of the road.
