1446721 2018-02-24 22:56:00 I have a Seagate hard drive, about 10 years old, which I use for backups. Lately it has been reluctant to connect, requiring the plug to be reinserted several times. This happens in Windows & Linux. In Windows 10 it refuses to disconnect and has to remain plugged in until shutdown. Linux does not have this problem. No unusual noise.

I have backed it up and propose to reformat it. Check disc finds nothing.
Any comments?

1446723 2018-02-24 23:00:00 The power adapters fail often, if it's a 3.5" that is.

Or is it 2.5" USB only?

1446724 2018-02-24 23:06:00 The cord is fixed (no plug)
The power is fine, drive runs, but doesn't engage.
When it does eventually engage you can move the cord around with no effects.

I may remove the drive from the case and try it in another adaptor. Just re-plugging might sort it.

1446725 2018-02-25 01:24:00 I have WD about that age.
Runs fine on USB1 but not always on USB2.

Interesting.
I have no USB 1. Once it is on it works fine, I will investigate further after I have backed up everything on it.

1446727 2018-02-25 19:57:00 throw it in the bin

a backup drive MUST be 100% reliable .
10 years old, so unless you want the nostalgia value, its not worth the effort . Its had a good run, time to retire it :)

1446728 2018-02-26 04:05:00 I would remove it from case and use as data drive (not for back-up or critical data), assuming it has standard SATA connections KarameaDave (15222)

About 18 months ago I picked up a USB external drive box for $10 at a garage sale (labelled 'not working'). Back at home transferred the 1Tb drive to a spare external box and it's been working great ever since. It's always worth trying the simple tests.
