1448981 2018-05-13 13:52:00 I use Mint 18.3 most of the time now. It boots in a few seconds, is fast & ready to work, and shuts down immediately. Windows 10 on the other hand, takes longer to boot, then has to update everything before you can get on with your work, and compared to Mint it is slow. Then when you want to shut down it sometimes takes for ever to do it. I dual boot W10 on my work computer because there is some software which I need to use occasionally. mzee (3324)
1448982 2018-05-13 19:30:00 My Win 10 Pro PC boots in about 15 seconds. I have never seen the update behaviour that you describe but then I do have updates set to install either at what I have selected is an appropriate time or on my command. CliveM (6007)
1448983 2018-05-13 21:56:00 I suspect the slow loading of Win10 you have is due to the Linux bootloader needing to decide what to do. I was running Mint a while ago on a media computer and it loaded no faster than my Win10 and had even more updates, enfact It was turned on roughly every other day and there were always updates waiting to be run. It is a stable OS but certainly no better than Windows in many regards and in some its worse. gary67 (56)
1448984 2018-05-14 22:52:00 Win10 IS just slow to start on many PC's . In the real world

Its not win10 slowing down the startup . A nice new clean WIn10 install isnt too bad. But...
You also have AV Loading updating & startup scanning, printer bloatware trying to load on startup, several cloud software syncing on startup , Brand name PC bloatware loading on startup .
And all the installed software checking for updates & installing updates on startup.

Then buggy drivers & software causing issues with shutdown.
Sure Win10 updates do slow things down as they install on shutdown/startup. Thats not every day day though.

I'd bet there more bloatware & crapware installed on Win10 PC than Lin PC's .

The big difference is the Mint updates take seconds to install and I’ve never had one break anything, as opposed to Win10 where the updates can take hours, or days even, and invariably break something.

1448987 2018-05-15 01:08:00 The difference is there is no such thing as a Linux update as in Windows ones. They are all volutary for starters, they come with choices, not a bundle the lot with a code number and you aren't told what it is.

Linux has your personal space updates, kernel updates, app updates, etc etc.

Even when I did the one and only I have yet, it allowed me choices, I allowed a couple of the new programs, but left most out, including the MintReport one.

Have yet to update a kernel....I want to be more familiar with it before I start messing with it.

Most of the time its crap loading in the background, Name brand PC's are the worst, If you have a New Windows ( say HP) it will take ages to start, wipe its drive and put in a fresh install of windows it will load in a fraction of the time.

Another thing is hardware, Most PC's will slow down over time regardless of the OS. Got a PC here that has both Linux and Windows on different drives. Windows loads approx. 20 seconds faster than Linux. Some Linux Distros wont even run on it, some wont even install.

Classic example of speed, got a Persons Laptop here. On a normal HDD, takes just under 2 minutes from completely off to fully running -- Cloned the HDD to a SSD, exact Same programs, nothing changed apart from the type of drive, now fully up and running in 14 seconds ( just timed it).

Im seeing more & more 'slow' PC's where the issue is the HD running insanely slow. Smart tests etc all show the HD as good
Replacing with a new/used mechanical HD fixes the issue .

It's NEVER hardware .

Come on . . . . . that's like saying my car drives slower now cause it's old .

Cleaning it out works wonders . As in a new install .
All the bloat that accumulates, registry, profiles, sys folders etc etc .

I'll allow a very old one will struggle, because of the way the write the newer software sometimes, but it has to be pretty damn old .

Friend of mine, a Unix man, still has 23 computers, from god knows what they are, pre-XT era, running all sorts of weird UNix flavours, never mind Linux .

I had to fix one once, a more modern one, new motherboard .

It had scii drives and a cd that connected to the sound card .

Fortunately I knew a guy who ran a sort of computer wreckers (he used to go through bins . . . ) and he actually had a motherboard of that type .
I got it going, the drivers stuff, I had to leave to the friend . . . .
