1448372 2018-04-16 08:14:00 I thought so but we are quick to forget once any emergency is over. We bought a couple of the flashlight/radio devices several years ago. One is also solar powered and both have crank handles, the old dynamo system. They work well and have been put to good use when needed.

I've bought them too, but I only think of them when there's a blackout.

1448373 2018-04-16 10:49:00 Here in the provinces we were issued with an ultimatum about our log fires. There are areas that have bad inversions here in HB. They have to be replaces with a compliant, low emission new model when the property is sold. It is a good deal that will eventually be not applicable in a couple of years time.as there was a grant given which bought the price down heaps.

We put one in last year and gave our old one (in perfect condition) to our son who is not in our area but still in HB.

I asked the installer why I just couldn't put a blob of weld on the vent control to stop it being closed fully which as far as I know is the only difference between the old and the new. He said that that would probably solve the problem but under current legislation, that if that was done, it would have to be sent to Auckland to be certified as it would not conform with standards. I asked what about certifying an engineer here in HB and he said that being a Council/Government outfit they wouldn't have had the brains to think of that. Smart lad. :)

Ken

you can get a wood burner certified. there was a stink years ago when whole lot where sold on TM that where not certed. easy enough just get guys to cert it, except that the cost of it was almost the cost of a new woodburner.

woodburners should be mandatory in any place that gets snow.
many years ago there was a bad snow storm which took power out. many people complained of lack of heating and that they could not refill gas bottles. if your in snow country power is going to go out. be ready.
auckland not to bad, put some more clothes on. cheap gas cooker and cans of gas will do the job.

1448374 2018-04-16 11:02:00 i find the tree situation interesting.
in rural areas power co cuts the trees out if they are anywhere near a power line.

1448375 2018-04-16 20:21:00 West Auckland is where people have held quite large protests when ever anyone attempts to trim or remove a tree quite regardless of who owns them or the fact that all permits to do do so have been obtained. CliveM (6007)

Ak council resist tree cutting , even when there was a real risk of it falling on your house or dropping huge branches onto your house
It took govt legislation to force Ak Council to allow felling of trees . used to have to get resource consent even for Pines

trees are more important than people or power in the councils eyes

1448377 2018-04-17 01:45:00 Are you guys saying that the Auckland City Council has the right to stop an Electricity Reticulation Company from servicing its lines?

I’d love to see that one tested in Court.

I know down our way both the P&T and Power Companies did routine Line Inspections and if for instance a Shelter Belt threatened any of the lines the problem was fixed at the owner’s expense.

No if’s, but’s, or maybe’s! :)

the council goes to the Environment Court. They will favor tress above all else .
Its a dirty trick they used to do . The council has endless funds for court proceedings .

Laws changed a few years back (thanks John Key) , so Councils have considerably less power over trees now .

Its obvious no one is cutting down trees that are a risk around where I live.
Power companies cant be bothered, council dont want to.

Ok, so why have fallen trees caused such a lengthy outage?

Also it appears they were unable to “Ring Feed” back to the breakage.

So many questions, all pointing to incompetence by Vector.

Yes, I was told it could be certified but to do that I would have to remove the fireplace after it had been modified, freight it to Auckland and back and pay a certifying charge.
Then reinstall it.

Stupid

probably because there is quite a number of breaks on each ring and probably breaks on the feeders to the rings.
and then theres the sheer tonnage of wood to be cut up and moved.
