1448971 2018-05-01 04:08:00 If Linux MINT made the command line less frequently required and had support for mainstream gaming I would have switched .

Even Piroskas "So simple . So small . So easy . " example with the scanner would piss me off, needing a terminal command to use the scanner in 2018? Really? .
But it does .

The scanner doesn't NEED it exactly, it launches from a one word command in it . There are ways to make a launcher instead . This is what Windows would call a shortcut .

Being one word, and the fact that I would use this rarely if at all, means I don't care and it can stay as is .
It's also why it took me a while to figure that out, I am so used to doing everything in Linux GUI .

But yes, gaming . It's better than it was . . . . have a look in Steam . . . but I agree proper gaming with ALL new game releases is still a Windows only thing .

1448972 2018-05-01 04:34:00 BM: It doesn't automatically install if you update, you need to add it after.

It would show in:
usr/share/linuxmint/mintreport

And you would see System Reports listed in Menu (and be able to remove it too)

It's not so auto either:

If you want to bug report, you select it and bring it up.
If you have it installed that is.

So is the guy who wrote the article talking rubbish ?

this tool received its codename (“mintReport”), because we started implementing it and because one of its feature is now completely ready and will be shipped with Linux Mint 18.3. ( under the Terminal Window)

1448974 2018-05-01 05:18:00 I NEVER said that, please point out exactly where in this thread. ?

All I said was Thats NOT mentioning a browser.

And what part of says it can. The wording says "if there was such an option"

"assuming that users utilize the feature." would indicate to me the feature was optional!

You said it "cant be turned off."

1448975 2018-05-01 07:26:00 Its all crap anyway, governments have been tracking you since the day you were born, lets face it your birth certificate, passport, ird number all get logged away and even when you die you still exist to them because without a death certificate they reckon your not dead. SO having Windows, Linux, Google or Apple tracking you is no different and they all do it in various ways regardless of what you think. Denying it is like supporting Trump you know he is evil just less evil than Putin. gary67 (56)

Dunno, I upgraded to it . And it is therefore an optional download .
And in any case it doesn't sit there sending stuff, you have to ask it to .

Simple way to check, check your firewalls outgoings . . . .

1448978 2018-05-01 18:07:00 Just a heads up guys, Suggest you don't upgrade to Mint 18.3 :( Just reading an article on it, it now by default sends information back to developers.

This is incorrect. mintreport (System Report) does not send anything by default. Nor does it even send anything to the developers (no phoning home whatsoever).

What this tool does is build a report from the information on your computer like your Mint release, your computer hardware, your packages installed, crash dumps of the program that crashed (logs, tracebacks, etc). You are then able to view these reports, open the directory containing these reports to see the file location, search the bug tracker for similar issues, post it to a pastebin type site or delete it. None of this is ever sent to the developers, if you put it on a pastebin site, you need to tell people the link for them to view it, so you too control who you give it to. These choices all require you to push the button.

The intentions for this is that if you do wish to report it to the bug tracker, you have the files they need to see (90% of reports are spent asking for more information or guiding users into producing the information, users may take days to come back and may also not give the right information or ignore it completely).

If you wish to discuss it, like in their IRC help channel or maybe post it in a forum. It's all up to you what you choose to do with it. For IRC and forums, the pastebin site is useful because you may not be able to upload the report files.

You also may never see this program in action (that's a good thing), so it's really up to you if you want to have it or not. It's in 18.3, but if you upgraded from earlier versions, you have to install it yourself.

1448979 2018-05-01 19:17:00 You know what though, it does look a bit like media twisting words.

"now by default sends information back to developers"

mint tools are normally frontends/guis for already existing tools. mintreport is no exception. It is built for apport. apport is normally disabled by default (in Ubuntu). it is now enabled by default in Mint (this is where you need to panic!, well not really, Mint and Ubuntu have different views and do this all the time).

So by default apport is now enabled. It can send information to the developers (it's actually a checkbox that's also checked by default asking if you want to ALSO send it to the developers) but... you need to acknowledge this by pushing a send/ok button. Did I mention that these reports are sent to developers in private? A private section of their tracker but still only seen by those who have access to it.

So, yea you can twist words around, leave words out and it kind of makes sense but it's really just someone out to ruin someone elses good reputation. So can I fix that sentences up? "apport by default is checked by default to send information back to developers. Just so happens Mint decides to enable apport, by default"

"

Yes but media haven't got any idea. Accuracy with details?

Anyway, I quite like Sylvia...I'm for sure not an upgrade person, I haven't updated anything at all on mine until this.
But there were a few extra bits in it I thought worth it.

I didn't add in everything though, picked through what I wanted and what I didn't.

I didn't with the reports...but then I know how you do that anyway....found that out quite early on in my Linux experience, LOL.
