We have a Ford Transit campervan and a couple of years ago went around quite a bit of Northland, though not north of Kaikohe. However we did all those roads years ago in a Fiat 128, and if we could go there in that heap of dung, we could do it in a Ford Tragic... On our most recent trip, we went up through the Waipoua Forest from Dargaville, and stayed a night in a neat little campground in Rawene overlooking the harbour - nice hosts there. If you are in the Kerikeri area, and want to stay a night nearby, there is a campsite called Aroha Island which has kiwis - you can wander around at night with a torch with red cellophane over the lens looking for them. The island is connected to the mainland by a short causeway. No power if I recall correctly, and limited water supplies, but a lovely quiet place to stay. If you are a member of NZMCA you don't need to use Campermate with a smart phone - just log into the NZMCA website and plan your journey using their online travel directory - it has equivalent information to Campermate. |
