754255 2009-03-06 23:26:00 Can you wildcard Search on Google?

The story goes like this.

I’m trying to do a Family Tree, a project I should never have started.

Having purchased a variety of certificates I find off a Marriage Certificate that my Grandmother’s maiden name was. McCa??au?kry. Well, that’s how it looks in the handwriting of over 100yrs ago.

So what I wanted to do is use wildcards for the letters I can’t read and see what I come up with.

No luck with .. or ?? on Google so far.

Actually, whilst typing this I’ve had another thought. I’ll post it as someone on here may be able to read it?

Any help more than appreciated. :thanks

754257 2009-03-07 00:04:00 I read it as M S Cannaughtry, with some doubt about the M Terry Porritt (14)
754258 2009-03-07 00:23:00 Damn, all I could work out was the S and the Y.

But what Terry said looks pretty close to me.

754259 2009-03-07 00:51:00 is it an NZ marriage certificate, if so the bdms are now online (bdmhistoricalrecords.identityservices.govt.nz s)

If you do a search on the Hubbys name at the approximate date, you should find the record

However be aware that the records are only as good as the person who transcribed them

754260 2009-03-07 01:16:00 Thanks Guy’s .

Don’t know whether it’s just me or not but I can’t find any Cannaughtry’s anywhere in the NZ BD&M site .

I’m pretty sure it’s an M Terry .

I’ve put up another scan here that shows a bit more, although it may need to be blown up a bit . Trouble with scanning A3 on a A4 scanner . :)

If you look at the M in Mill Hand & Mill Owner it looks the same to me .

(Paging all our handwriting experts) . :)

Also, as the space only requires a Surname I can’t help thinking it’s Mc something .

The blob may be the figure 2 which is part of the original form .

Another thing is I believe she was of Irish extraction which would make a Mc a distinct possibility . ;)

Anyway, thanks again everyone for your input .

754261 2009-03-07 01:20:00 You can do wildcard word searches using Google, but not wildcard letters unfortunately. You'll need to find out the full name before you can search for it - possibly using other searches . Erayd (23)
754262 2009-03-07 01:57:00 McCannaughy? stevesumner (4849)
754263 2009-03-07 02:28:00 That # in the top right hand corner, would be the registration number?

If it existed on the BDM site, wouldnt the names come up on that?

Thats if its not over 80 yrs old

754264 2009-03-07 02:37:00 Maybe Cannaughry?

Edit: Perhaps McCannaughry? Or Connaughry / McConnaughry?
