854361 2010-02-01 10:18:00 The new Telecom supplied Thomson 585 wireless modem/routers don't even come with a CD or setup guide. This doesn't bother most users as you plug it it and it works!

However, it confuses me as I tried to change its admin password for security reasons but failed miserably. It fires up from the browser with no request for id or pwd. First puzzlement.

But when you try to change its admin password, it prompts for an id and password but with no setup guide I didn't know what they were (Administrator/admin etc didn't work). Second puzzlement.

So, what is it with this id password thing? Does it have them? If so, how come it logs straight in? If not, how is it secured from external hackers?

Am I a typical nerd who tries too hard to fathom these things when they just should be left to do their own thing?

854362 2010-02-01 10:23:00 Maybe it just fires up from an ADSL enabled landline. Sweep (90)
854363 2010-02-01 10:24:00 Is this it (telecom.custhelp.com). If it is, it doesnt look like it uses / needs a password / login Speedy Gonzales (78)
854364 2010-02-01 16:06:00 If you need any of the manuals have a look here (www.thomsonbroadbandpartner.com). There is also a CLI guide which gives detailed instructions. notechyet (4479)
854365 2010-02-01 19:59:00 I think Telecom may have there own firmware in these. A telecom tech told me
that there is a 2nd admin login/pass for Telecom use only & public will never have access to that. This would explain why they SEEM to be so unconfigurable

I know there old handout Dlink was a Telecom only version & if you tried to update with normal firmware you would brick it.

854366 2010-02-01 21:52:00 All I can say is that access is easy through telnet.
Command prompt>telnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx(ip of device)
User : Administrator
PW: leave vacant
Go on from here with the CLI commands as per guide.
Hope that is of some help:2cents:

854367 2010-02-01 22:31:00 But when you try to change its admin password, it prompts for an id and password

this may be Telecoms 2nd secret login . Telecom tech confirmed they have one
hence its 2nd internal ip. They 'user' login/pass will not give you complete config access

854369 2010-02-02 01:24:00 Thanks, guys, for taking the trouble to respond .

Yes, Speedy, that is it .

Basically, I am happy that all that is needed is to plug a few things in and power it up but I was trying to help secure it from outside hacking by changing the password . Telecom obviously don't think this is necessary/desirable in their modified systems .

Cheers and thanks again for the helpful info and links .
