854346 2010-02-01 08:12:00 I'll be replacing my sister's PC with a newer one in a couple of months, but at present she has a PC running ME. She has been on dial up until this week so has not bothered updating the anti virus/malware/spyware programs I had on it.
What should I get her to run until the PC switch over?
Spybot S&D, Avira anti virus free? How many are needed for ME? (how many support ME?). Do any hackers care about ME anymore?
Thanks.

854348 2010-02-01 08:54:00 If the PC already has antivirus on it, carry on using it - all it means is the speed will be faster. wainuitech (129)

I haven't tried Avira but none of the others work now. Not Spybot, Malware Bytes, SPyware Terminator, AVG or AVast.

Hackers...........if you mean will she get malware, of course she will. There's plenty of old stuff still out there even if new malware has been written to tareget more modern O/Ss. SOme doesn't care at all what version of windows it is, it all depends on the specific malware.

Win98/ME is now history, not because it doesn't run, but you can't protect it anymore.

Really? Cause every time I've tried it, it won't install.
Older versions would but then they immediately moan it's out of date and won't update definitions because the version is too old.
I spent ages doing this recently, trying to find stuff that worked.

Yes. I had it set up on broadband years ago when it was mine. My sister could only afford dial up until recently. She is now up and running on broadband. She never kept the definitions up to date as she didn't have the patience/discipline to do it with dial up. I had been running Spybot, AdAware, and a few others that I can't remember (and some that aren't around or supported anymore, as PC Tech mentioned).
Will have a look at what download.com has that still supports ME. Only has to last a couple more months.
