| 853778 | 2010-01-31 02:36:00 | Hi. don't know what I've done but think I have caused a mess when I went to open a text file in notepad and clicked the .iso instead. When computer opens into desktop all the programs that open at startup and show in task bar are creating notepad files grouped together. These are Avast home AV ( AshDisp), Comodo Firewall, Yahoo Messenger, TR Scan, Firefox, AdobeARM, reader_sl, with AxCmd and ETcall which are totally alien to me. Try to open a program or App from Start Menu or desktop shortcut and I get a notepad window full of machine language heiroglyphs. All the launch icons look like shhets of paper with a green arrow pointing upwards in the bottom left hand corner. Tried System restore, told its not available. Tried restore from Safe mode but didn't like the " Not reversible" option that was all that was available. Reinstalled the OS as an Upgrade from the open desktop. Only prob there is that it kept the computer settings. Try to do a System Restore from the 'New' installation and am told that now, there aren't any restore points...( where did the four that were there go?....not that it matters, they gone  Media player works, i can read .txt files but thaats about it really. Gifted the com I now have only last tuesday by a friend who has terminal cancer. It came complete with the Vid card disc, XP Home OS disc and coa and the Win7 Ultimate OS disc + coa that she had installed to it and which it is running now. I remember when she bought it from PB Tech, Porana Rd, Auckland and it still has almost a year warranty left on it. What do you think I can do to fix up my error aand get all back to normal without my having to do a complete format/fresh instal of everything? Appreciate your advice. I'm using mates com as mine won't open a browser ( may do in safe mode but I'm miles away from home at mo.) One other way, bit long winded, but reset to defaults - Fixes here (www.sevenforums.com) You can of course do it manually as well, click start, type in Default look for default programs in the results, open and select Set your default programs. Work through as required. |

| 853780 | 2010-01-31 05:40:00 | Thanks wainuitech. I'll download to flash drive your suggestions and fixes and try when I get home shortly. I did try the Right click an App, open with-select program that you mention but that still bought up the notepad situation I have at mo. I'll be away home to try your suggestions and thanks again. At the end of the day if I have to format HDD and reinstall everything I will. The computer came to me with only about 10GB of its HDD space used. I've added the rest to it ( about 30GB ) and I can do it all from new. Here goes. If I have a positive result I'll post back in a couple of hours. gza |

| 853781 | 2010-01-31 09:32:00 | I'm back and very happy chappie. Computer is without the problem anymore. Got home and opened the first of 6 saved pages of the Win 7 Forum's Default File Type Associations - Restore to which you posted the links, I found myself connected to the internet and reading page one. Beauty, didn't fancy having to read my way through the Save page as > Text files that i had also saved to usb stick. Prior to opening the saved pages I had tried your other suggestions, especially the " You can of course do it manually as well, click start, type in Default look for default programs in the results, open and select Set your default programs. Work through as required." that you mentioned. I tried resetting/choosing the Default to open with but not all the programs on my computer showed, so I did those that were there and then tried to open the program from its Start menu/Programs icon. Unfortunately, I still had the Notebook problem. Going into Regedit is well over my head. I decided to open Computer / C drive / Programs and try to open the App from the .exe file. Every one I tried opened into Notebook. I took a stab in the dark and figured that all the Programs/Apps,.exe's, are somehow opening with notebook. ( I guess you already knew that huh, : )....sso I read the Win 7 Forum pages. After four pages and a few branches off to other links, I ended up back at page one of the forum:- Windows 7 - Default File Type Associations - Restore Here's How: ............. 1. Click on the file extension type link listed below for the one that you wish to restore to default to download it's .zip file. 2. Save the .zip file to your desktop. 3. Open the .zip file, then extract the .reg file to the desktop. 4. Right click on the .reg file and click on Merge. 5. Click on the Run button in the Security Warning pop-up. 6. Click on Continue (UAC), Yes, and OK when prompted. 7. When done, you can delete the downloaded .zip and .reg files on the desktop if you like. 8. Log off and log on, or restart the computer to apply. Default Windows 7 File Extension Types: ....................................... From all the extension types listed I opted for the .exe and downloaded the file, followed the instructions in the " Here's how" and voila! Excellent and thank you very much.Beats the format/reinstal I had almost resigned myself to having to do. :thanks :thumbs |
