Broadband is far too expensive in new zealand though . I miss my father's broadband connection in HK.

755816 2009-03-14 01:46:00 I cheat - I'm at uni, and the speedtest server is the ISP that the uni uses. Hence the low ping and high speeds. stephen (9719)

755818 2009-03-14 08:38:00 I don't get how I can get lower download speeds and pings to local servers.

In WGTN I get 3.8MB/s and 120ms. Sydney servers go to 4.2MB/s and 60ms.

HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE???

755819 2009-03-14 19:40:00 The short local connection (with all those corners etc.) does not allow the signals time to get to full speed, whereas on the NZ - Sydney route there are long straight sections where the signal can really let fly. ;) ;) R2x1 (4628)

But the signal still has to get to Takapuna where the overseas cable lands, so it still has to travel over NZ's cabling before the undersea stretch. ;)

By the time it gets to Takapuna, it is underground, so it avoids the speed traps and just speeds through. The local stuff goes by surface and so can get pinged by speed cameras.

(Some Telecom "broadband" is so slow it can be pinged with oil paintings ;) )
