I'd be happy to copy a VHS tape to DVD for you. It will only cost you the postage if you live outside the Greater Wellingtoin region :)

PM me if you are interested.

754198 2009-03-08 23:53:00 This might heat things up a little . Since we are allowed to make archival copies of media here in the States (and this is really an international forum anyway) - there was a way to get around the security code in the older VHS tapes .

We made coils of very fine wire around a large diameter hot cereal container (Mother's Oats comes to mind) and we'd put - Oh, say - 500 turns of #32 to #40AWG wire on it as neat as we could and then a layer of waxed paper and then another separate coil of the same number of turns and wire size over the first set of windings .

Using either the inner or the outer coil, we'd put the output from the VCR to your TV set into one coil and another VCR input attached on the other coil .

(I told you this was the old days - ah! VCR-TO-VCR dubbing!)

Press PLAY on the VCR with the tape you want to dup and RECORD on the other .

It sidestepped the security bars - I believe it was the lack of actual physical contact with each of the VCRs that didn't trip the security devices . .

Now I say this was legal at the time in the US, and it still is, but it was just a way of getting around how the studios played games with you .

Hopefully NZ wakes up to the obvious and let's thing slide about the RIAA and MPAA and just thumbs their nose at an impotent paper tiger .

754199 2009-03-09 04:25:00 I'm in the same situation, except I don't think I have many copyright tapes to worry about, but I do have a large archive of off-air VHS tapes that I want to convert to DVD and I see no problem is doing that .

If I was legally entitled to make a recording off air, I am equally entitled to transfer it from one medium to another, and I certainly won't be wanting the old tapes once I have finished . We do have a few copyright tapes but to be perfectly honest, none of them seem worthy of saving .

Once you have decided your dubbing method (mine will be direct to an HDD video recorder with DvD writer and from thence to the DVD) the most important thing is to use a good VCR to play the tape so that you get the best possible quality .

I bought a new Panasonic VCR for playback (cheap as chips) and it's amazing what it can pull off a tired old tape, even from programs recorded recently on ancient tapes and using an equally ancient old NV-730 with well-worn heads that has to be all of 20 years old .

Being a techo I have always liked Panasonic equipment for its reliability and solid performance, and Mrs T and I have a 20" Panasonic teletext TV in our bedroom that is coming up 30 years old and it is still in daily use and looking good .

I have a new Panasonic HDD/DvD recorder to go with the VCR and I'm rather looking forward to being able to watch some of the old stuff again .

Cheers

Do you mean stuff you have recorded off the T . V, if thats the case all you are allowed to do is time shift, too record so it can be watched at a later date . So once watched it should be deleted . Well so the law says

754201 2009-03-09 22:02:00 Another point of fascination - at least to me - is that youse guys can still find VCRs to buy in stores .

They have been discontinued here in the States for about a year now and even places like Wal-Mart and K-Mart don't have them .

754202 2009-03-09 22:31:00 So I will admit that really it isn't worth me bothering. At 76 and with two fairly recent tape decks it is likely they will see me out.
And if I really want to replace any film I have with a DVD then just go out and buy it.
Is "Sound of Music" on DVD?
Or perhaps I already have it.

Tom

Just thought you would all like to know that in clearing out those old cupboards and getting all my tapes and DVDs in one area I have made the astonishing discovery that I do in fact have The Sound Of Music on a DVD.

Could life get any better?

754203 2009-03-09 23:33:00 Copyright law would be changed much faster if everyone obeyed it. shermo (12739)
