| 754358 | 2009-03-07 06:19:00 | I work in one of the "safe" industries. My job (and my prospects within the sector) will not be affected by a recession. Hmm - you're not a civil servant, by any chance? :D Since I've now been unemployed for five weeks, we are definitely looking harder at our household expenditure. Not much we can do about the mortgage - in the process of asking for a mortgage holiday, but the bank sounds a bit negative about the idea since I don't have a job. And WINZ will only assist with the mortgage repayments on the original loan. Doesn't matter that the other mortgage is also secured against the property!! Dumb. If I fail on the payments on the first or the second, the end result will be the same. But WINZ doesn't see that. They are more concerned about the original purpose of the loan. :groan: Don't know why I bothered paying huge amounts of tax for the last 10-15 years! :groan: But we're still picking beans and tomatoes and capsicums and raspberries, and the pumpkins are coming along nicely. EDIT: Just saw Deane's denial about being a civil servant... |

| 754360 | 2009-03-07 06:43:00 | Anyway, I thought the National govt is going to trim the civil service right back. I heard on the news of one govt department with 300 employees getting ready to trim 50 staff. | Deane F (8204) | ||
| 754361 | 2009-03-07 06:51:00 | Investing heavily in a business for my wife, and in the early stages of launching another company for myself. That said, we have always run a tight ship when it comes to debt, we do tick stuff up but only one item at a time. Work wise, we laid off a bunch of people, People aren't paying their bills, 2 major jobs have been put off with no start date, and while we have priced a dozen jobs in the last month half have stalled and the other half have been priced well below a realistic amount by others. Still, No drama, we have traded through recession before, Its just a matter of being nimble enough to react to any downturn, You start trading to survive rather then to make money. Makes for interesting times, Quite enjoying it. |

What you think and I think may differ. You heard on the news and you actually believe the news? I have mentionend in the past that civil servants do not get voted out. Oh dear. |

I heard on the news of one govt department with 300 employees getting ready to trim 50 staff. I think that is TEC from the news. Having friends who work in the govt sector, their jobs are not certain. They are looking at cutting cost, putting projects on hold, not extending contractors / fixed term contract staff. They are even looking at if the management structure can be streamlined and take out somf fluff. So permanent staff could go too. In the past what they spent on was not so much scrutinised and they could of up started a project if they had money left, but now they are cutting it back even if they have money now, like hand back. |

| 754366 | 2009-03-07 08:54:00 | To economise a bit, I now chew my food 200 times instead of 50, and even the water I drink gets chewed 100 times. I am not going to vote for any government for a year or two, and I only water the lawn with rain water. On cloudy days I turn my shadow off, and also outside at night. To conserve water, only swim at low tide. |

I think a lot are doing that atm, the company I work for just lost a couple of big jobs because a rival company priced so low we couldnt even come close to matching it, even if we cut all profit from it and whacked down our wages. How they do it I have no idea but I guess some cashflow is better than none. Its sad in a way because companies that could do the job right the first time are losing out to companies with bad reps but cheap prices |
