 The Wgtn YHA (http://www.yha.org.nz/)is one of the best backpackers in NZ. Recently renovated and opened by PM Helen Clarke herself. Great central location and the common areas (kitchen, dining, tv, etc) are far better than other Wgtn backpackers. Single (private) rooms are not cheap, however.

Another one is Lodge in the City (http://www.lodgeinthecity.co.nz/). Cheaper than YHA and close to Cuba Street.

Rotorua YHA was best hostel in Australasia.

I recently read Central YHA Sydney also won an award for something.

Going with other YHA hostels, yeah you can get single, twin, tri, quad and even 8 or 9 per room. When I was in London the standard was ensuite with air conditoning. I think Queenstown Central YHA was ensuite too with TV.

But if you want single room to yourself going with other YHA I think it is $50 or $60 per night. You may or may not get ensuite but you may only need that 2x a day so not a problem, they do have private shower berths that is not transparent nor do you shower in a big room with no walls :p

I remember Sapporo YHA in Japan was so good, every room was single renovated recently when I was there, a combination lock wardrobe too for your private stuff. Bathroom was shared but the toilets were like heated toilet seats with warm water spray.
