Still after all that the same symptoms.Booting in Safe mode is possible, after I switch completely off and start again, pressing DEL a few times. I'm lost. optusone (11671)
854032 2010-02-01 23:23:00 Can you get hold of an Ubuntu live CD?
Boot to it and run Memtest.
I would run a Diagnostic program from the Hard drive manufacturer
as well.
Have you looked in event viewer as pctek suggests?

You should probably update to SP3 at some stage (though not if it is going to crash in the middle of the process).

854033 2010-02-02 00:10:00 Today the blue screen came up,saying the problem was caused by "PartMgr.sys" and I should disable certain BIOS options as caching and shadowing. Few years ago I split the C drive into C and D with Partition Magic8 .Recently I tried to reverse this action with the same program, now I got only C drive and the contents of former D are stored in a folder under C. Has the crashing to do with all that ?Is there a way to reinstall the whole system?all important programs and data is stored on an external hard drive anyway,so I could erase everything and reinstall windows from scratch.Or better not? optusone (11671)
854034 2010-02-02 00:15:00 Looks like software problem rather than hardware then. Sweep (90)
854035 2010-02-02 00:29:00 So, partition manager which is part of XP is crashing. Search for it. What version does it show under version? Is partionmagic still installed?? If it is, uninstall it Speedy Gonzales (78)
