757326 2009-03-18 02:00:00 Hi Guys

I got a Westpac Visa Debit Card two years and it is very handy when you need to pay for things online etc.

But I suggest that if you have one that you check your statement (paper or on line) regulalry say once a month or once a fortnight.

I got done a few months ago with five or six payments made to unknown places with names such as Mycswire.com, Webpmtfee.com and Personassist.com. They had all taken about $39 US out of my account and some of them had done it twice ! They make it look like a regular payment. I had a regular payment to Google and Statcounter, so I missed them.

When I realised I was being done I rang the bank and filled in a form and have just got some refunds !

So all I can say is just check your account regularly.

I cant understand how these scum bags get away with it cos I worked for a small NZ company that wanted to set up incoming credit card payments and it took them a few months and the bank said that they only gave that facility out to companies that were bona fide and had been with them a while and they made 2 personal visits to our site !

I could understand it if the payments were to brownpaperbag.com or russianbridesrus.com he he.

757327 2009-03-18 02:05:00 i havent had any trouble like that with my debit card

apart from the fact ive destroyed 4 and need a 5th this week sometime

it seems the cards just fall to bits and stop reading after a few weeks its rather annoying

i use it once a day so it does about 20 swipes before it goes all crap and needs tape and paper to make it read properly :badpc:

A lot of those issues relate to the swipe mechanisms not being serviced properly by the retailer. They are supposed to clean them regularly, but many places resort to the plastic bag method when the swipe mechanism won't read.

I get mightily pissed off at the retailer when they look at me as if I have a faulty card, especially when I have just used it successfully in an ATM (which ARE serviced regularly). But it's no use trying to tell the checkout chick...

I have had to leave my car at the petrol station before - walk to an ATM machine and withdraw cash - becuase their stupid swipe mechanism was faulty and didn't read my card.

:mad::mad: was not happy :mad::mad:

I know what you mean. I had a payment for arsenal tv go through twice last month :stare:

Had to email them and ask what happened. Turned out that they had tried to make the payment twice (over 2 days) and it had been declined the first time :o. Still ran off with my money for the first one though, but got a refund a day or so later.

I am just wondering why people get debit cards instead of credit cards. Ok, so the debit card is attached to your bank account, so the money is debit directly, which makes things easy. However with a credit card it is win-win if you pay it all off monthly. With a credit card you also get free use of someone elses money for a month, so you earn interest on that money in your bank for an extra month, that you will use to pay off the credit card. My bank also doesn't have any annual fee for their credit card, as I am a premium account holder, so a credit card makes financial sense over eftpos.
I guess if you aren't able to get credit from a credit card company, then a debit card may be the only option. A debit card is win-win for the credit card company too, they are not lending any money, but they can still earn 2-5% commission on the transaction.

I also wouldn't be happy to have those typesof fraudulent transactions being debited directly from my bank account without my authorisation, which is why I wouldn't use a debit card. It couldn't happen with eftpos, unless someone has your card and pin.

Yeah I am not sure either . Kiwibank had the tv commercial so I visited the site at work . From what I can see is that the commission to swap dollars ie . , when you are travelling overseas the percentage is higher than a normal credit card form Kiwibank . There is also the $10 annual fee . It also says if you do an investigation it is calculated per 15min or such to a max of $60 whereas the normal credit card makes no note of it .

The Kiwibank Mastercard Zero does not even have a annual fee if you use it once per 3 months .

The only thing I see with a debit card is that some people who have bad credit or not working can get one and maybe for more security but then again its about the same thing, losing money on credit vs losing money you already have .

Dur - it could also happen with a credit card if you give your number overs the phone they could if they wanted to put it through again some other day or sell the details to a friend !

No it cant happen with Eftpos - but you can't buy from overseas with an eftpos card !

757334 2009-03-18 07:48:00 Debit cards are good for those who cannot budget or spend to the limit and then can't pay it back, you might laugh but if you think hard enough i bet you could name someone in either category gary67 (56)

Yes, but the fraudalent user would then be debiting DIRECTLY from the cash you have in the bank. Lets say you have $20,000 in your bank, then they could remove all your money from the bank, and then it could then take weeks to get the moeny back again from the credit card company while they investigate. You may have APs set up from that bank account, that could mean that they get rejected if you go into overdraft. You may also go into overdraft which would be expensive interest rates. At least with an actual credit card, you aren't actually losing that money in your bank account temporarily, it has been stolen from the credit card company directly.
Personally I can't see any advantage for someone who has a good credit rating. However I can see the benefit if I didn't have a good credit rating.
