| 756580 | 2009-03-15 04:55:00 | Cool wee project, beetle! It's going to depend on the state it's in now and how much time/money you want to spend on it.... Will you be wanting it as something to get around in immediately, or will you be parking it in the garage to work on over a period of time? The answer to that question will determine the next steps... Questions to ask: Does the battery turn the engine over? If no, does a jump start work? Does it run? (if it's been sitting around for a while, the oil in the engine won't be in any fit state to lubricate the engine - might need the attention of a sympathetic mechanic) Will it get a WOF? (If it's been there as long as I suspect it has, it will need re-registering too) Is there rust damage? What state are the tyres? PS. BillyT might be interested in the valve radio bits.... |

| 756581 | 2009-03-15 05:07:00 | Ok............. its been at least 10 years............ dont even think its got a battery in it any more.... it was in good running condition when we stored it, im not worried about paint job, the seats are fine, seems to have lost its radio tho........... mr nobody no's about that one. id say yes the oil is a change moment, and the petrol...... would i need to strip down the motor? we put VW pistons in it last time it was going, so it gets a little more kick, and if i recall we modified the axles........ they are only 10mm thick. its currently on rego hold, has been the whole time...... always wanted to get it going again... but alas, my dad became too sick to help me do that. and now he's not there for me to ask lots of those sorts of questions.. it will be getting transported to my house in the next few weeks, when i make room in my shed.....lol i doubt it will pass a warrant, pumped up tyres, some ok, have to find the spares, but i think the brakes are locked up. beetle |

I say keep it beets, and do it up. Be a cool project. And then there's the sentimental 'value'.... |

And then there's the sentimental 'value'.... LOL yeah, i have some time i have a little bit of money but the knowledge and knowhow is not so hot...... the sentimental value is huge. My sister learnt to drive in it....with me sitting in the back about 6 yrs old, and sucking my thumb, scared witless, going up and down our farm drive....... :waughh: i learnt to drive in it as well, and i have been around the country in - to hamilton etc, and its been in the family um 35 - 40 years? my dad had it before my sister...... they bought it together.... so yeah... and my daughter wants me to get it going so when she gets to be old enuf to drive she can drive it........... :waughh: but its got to be pink by then she says!!!!! i have plenty of time........... :D beetle |

| 756585 | 2009-03-15 05:25:00 | Why was it parked up in the first place? I reckon you should do the project, Though it will probably cost far more then you budget for, and you will never make your money back. But such projects usually aren't about money.....unless you can't afford to do it. If you run out of money then you have lost every cent put into it. |

Old cars eat money like crazy . How mechanical are you? Good at stripping down cars, reconditionaing parts and rebuilding them? DIY costs loads . Getting someone else to do it costs even more . Like the Lotto ad with the guy with the Jag . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |

| 756588 | 2009-03-15 05:47:00 | LOL Its become a classic now......... its older than me:p and why? at the stage we gave up driving it was i was pregnant and having problems, a scary pregnancy and told for medical reasons to not drive it while preg, then we found after babe came a long the cars seats we had then didnt cope with a childs car seat........ so it got put on hold again.... and then the then hubby was working 70hrs plus a week, them i started studying, and we moved to the motel and were running it 24/7 and then 3 + years ago i became single and tried to just get by in life, and now dads shed needs to be sorted and it seemed the right time to do something, for me.... and i used to be pretty good at DIY, my first abition was to become a mechanic...... but it never happened. and i have all the books that came with it, and can identify the parts which is better than some? but if all the parts are there............ what are the possible costs? be honest, its a tiny motor, and hardly any rust, the paint job can wait and ill get someone to do that. i can get the sunroof done by my canvas man mate, he does that for a job. i have the option of my dads workshop stuff, or my brothers workshop, (which is bigger than my 3 bedroom house) i have all the gear to use if needed, i can weld...... i just need to make sure i put it back in / on how it came off..:p i have 2 motorbike mechanics in the family, a ex panelbeater, an electrician, and a ex car saleman in the family too so if i need something......surely i can source it? beetle :p |
