854812 2010-02-03 00:19:00 I want to host my own site, i have the bandwith, and static IP, but in terms of hardware, i wanted to use an mini Asus EEE 1000HA net book. It has 2gb RAM, and 160GB hard drive. which is overkill for a webserver. The downside is that it has XP home, I dont have an external CD Drive, and have tried to get server 2003 on there via usb, without success. What is better for a webserver? Linux or Windows? im not opposed to linux, just never really used it.

Any suggestions? (i realise im using a laptop for a server)

854813 2010-02-03 00:23:00 Puppy Linux has a Hiawatha web server in it.
(Don't use it myself though)

Tricky without a real CDROM.

If you have to id make a virtual machine particularly if you are just beginning. That way you can continue to use your windows machine and use linux or microsoft in a VM. You can just mount isos with the VMware or virtualbox

You dont need server 2003 in particular. Is it even a legit serial? I would consider simply XP + XAMPP for a beginner .

Then I might make a VM with ubuntu server 8.04 in it. That way you can choose whether or not to have a GUI which will take up resources.

Yep puppylinux has an odd little http server.

854815 2010-02-03 00:42:00 haha yes its a legit version of 2003 ( Windows 2003 Standard R2 32bit) holographic and never been opened

I did think of VM but do i have the specs? 1.6 gHz atom processor, 2GB RAM, 160GB I realised i dont need 2k3, but i thought since its what im used to, il throw it on. how hard is it to use apache webserver?

Ive used vmware server on 2.4ghz pentium 4. Its the ram you need lots of. And we arent running 5 instances of vista and gaming at the same time :xmouth:

What I would do is install XAMPP on your current XP, install drupal, wordpress that sort of thing. Then consider ubuntu server in a VM to learn how the other 60% of the world do it.

854817 2010-02-03 01:03:00 Apache would be my suggestion, though it may take some getting used to if you're only familiar with Windows GUI-based applications (though there is a Win32 version of Apache, I have only used it on Linux/Unix based systems so not sure what its like).

Otherwise, IIS under Win2k3 or 2k8 server. Make sure you secure it!

854818 2010-02-03 01:43:00 i thought IIS wud be easier, but wanted to make sure i explore all options aidanmaz (7180)
854819 2010-02-03 02:23:00 yep you still havent said if its for testing or public. If your going to use IIS in particular I would use it in a virtualmachine so you doint get rooted within hours. That way you can pause it and come back to it too. pkm (13527)
854820 2010-02-03 04:15:00 Public...sorry shud have said aidanmaz (7180)

I'm not sure how running an OS in a virtual machine helps you with security

Besides I'm not aware of any current version IIS vulnerabilities that will give you root access, are you?
