854745 2010-02-02 23:37:00 Well they're both names for connections types between your motherboard and devices like optical drives and hard drives.

SATA supports higher data transfer speeds and (generally) you can connect a whole lot more SATA devices to a mobo than IDE ones. the cables are a lot smaller and easier to plug/unplug too. hardly any modern stuff uses IDE.

854747 2010-02-03 02:13:00 And the sata cables are small and pretty but have fragile connectors, and the ide cables are large and not pretty but are easy to bend in to tidy shapes for excellent cable management.

Seeing as the technical aspect has been covered already.........
