756564 2009-03-16 03:26:00 Are you or any one else who works in these places able to say why the alcohol system is being brought in?

I could understand if alcohol was being sold to people under age, but if thats the case then people who are obviously over the age limit shouldn't have a problem ??
I don't know who pushed this system into effect - the government or Progressive. It would be a suicidal move if it was the latter's decision. We are not told much about why the law is being implemented, but perhaps it's ever since 'Target' is doing the hidden camera thing....

This will be everybody's problem. Supervisors will have to go back and forth, checkout staff would have to put up with irate customers, and the customers would be pissed at having to wait even though they are legal to purchase these things.

I'm supposed to say nice things about this system, but screw them. I'm telling all my customers what I truly think about this POS.

Several Wellington New Worlds have been doing this for some time. One at least has the super on a cordless headset phone. The waiting time is no worse than waiting for the supervisor to clear mistakes by the checkout staff :p

756567 2009-03-16 04:37:00 Yep seems a bit strange, we went there last night as countdown didn't have what the mrs wanted - we also went there during the week as they had beer cheaper and we got a couple of small items and all the checkout operators were doing it both times.
Do you two have matching Fair Isle Jersey 's,
I always think how nice it is when you see a matching couple!

That's New World. They are far better off. Countdown at least is the South Auckland of all the Auckland regions. When we are busy all the supervisors will be manning their own tills, leaving no one to supervise. They will have to come on and off their till to serve other customers needing other services/help the regular checkout staff. Now add that usual busy hectic with the new system.

I always think how nice it is when you see a matching couple! Not quite - She darts from place to place - I follow behind with the shopping trolley, playing dodgems :D complaining about taking to long esp in the meat department - when we get to the booze she looks over several usually saying stuff that to expensive - I grab it any ways ;) then she drinks more than half the amount we brought.

Got to let her think shes boss you know - less fights that way. :wub
Mind you she says she lets me think that way -- Oh its so confusing

Gary's comment - my wife is Dutch

756572 2009-03-17 03:02:00 My dragon the same, makes supermarket or any shopping a real nightmare.
If she finds something cheaper further on she will take stuff out of the trolley and put it back.
I would rather get my teeth pulled with no pain killer than supermarket shop with swmbo.
When I was single I used to speed shop with my flatmates in the supermarket. One person reading from a list the other throwing the crap in and pushing the trolley at mach speeds and cornering fast and tight on the turns into the isles.
I wasnt the only male getting stuffed around by their dragon shopping either, they are easy to spot they are the one rolling their eyes and wringing their hands.
Different story in liquor shop thats my candyland.

756573 2009-03-17 04:18:00 I solve the shopping problem by doing it myself.

Started as an escape from young children (mine) for an hour or so. Now it's an escape from SWMBO AND older children for an hour or so. And there's the added advantage of less sophisticated males letting/expecting their yummy mummy partners do the weekly shop...

And SWMBO thinks I'm doing her a favour!!

But I agree with the Onecard sentiments - it's not a discount card and it discourages casual shopping.

I am a lucky resident of the lower North Shore who, among thousands of other locals, is extremely well-serviced by Progressive stores: Countdown Birkenhead, Countdown Glenfield, Foodtown Glenfield, Foodtown Takapuna, Woolworths Northcote and Woolworths Milford. In the same area we have New World Devonport (too far!), New World Birkenhead, New World Hauraki Corner, New World Milford (and a few Asian supermarkets that I wouldn't go into because of the smell coming out their front doors!) - and a Pak 'N' Save in Albany (I think there's a Mairangi Bay Countdown/Foodtown/Woolworths and same in Sunnynook and Browns Bay too).

Progressive have been using the RMA for nearly 20 years to prevent a Pack 'N' Save opening in Wairau Road. Pack 'N' Save have finally got consent and they are opening in May!!

In May, there will be a HUGE flood of customers away from the Progressive-owned stores, who have been ripping us off all these years (at one point Woolworths Northcote was the most expensive supermarket in the country!) and whose customer service levels and disappearing product lines have been p*ssing people off so much, especially recently with their arrogant harassment of a potential competitor. Can't wait!!!
